Cobblestone Railroad Pumphouse
Cobblestone Railroad Pumphouse is a historic pumphouse located at the hamlet of Fishers in the town of Victor in Ontario County, New York. It was constructed about 1845 by the Auburn and Rochester Railroad and is a small cobblestone structure. It is built of relatively large, rough variously colored field cobbles. It is one of approximately 101 cobblestone buildings in Ontario County. Victor is an incorporated town in Ontario County, New York. The population was 15,969 at the time of the 2020 census. The town is named after Claudius Victor Boughton, an American hero of the War of 1812. The Town of Victor contains a village, also called Victor. The town is in the northwest corner of Ontario County and is southeast of Rochester. The Auburn and Rochester Railroad was a railroad company based in New York state in the 19th century. Introduction The Auburn and Rochester Railroad Company was built to bring Canandaigua access to regional and national markets and sources. Extending southeast from Rochester to Geneva and Canandaigua with a trackage length of 78½ miles, its right-of-way exceeded that of the contemporaneous and nearby Auburn and Syracuse Railroad Company. The road was chartered on 13 May 1836. The Panic of 1837 slowed construction, and the Genesee River had to be bridged. The line reached Geneva in September 1840, Canandaigua in November 1841. Cobblestone architecture refers to the use of cobblestones embedded in mortar as method for erecting walls on houses and commercial buildings. It was frequently used in the northeastern United States and upper Midwest in the early 19th century; the greatest concentration of surviving cobblestone buildings is in New York State, generally near the historic Erie Canal or connecting canals.
