Coates is a small village close to the town of Whittlesey, in the English county of Cambridgeshire. Coates has a shop which includes a post office. Description The village has two greens, North Green and South Green, which are divided by the busy A605 road, which runs through the village. There is a small shop which includes a post office. Coates has a church, a chapel, a village hall and a primary school. Local businesses include a Chinese takeaway (Lucky House), two pubs (The Carpenters Arms and The Vine), a violin shop (Simon Watkin Violins) and a number of farms. It also has a war memorial on North Green. The village has its own fishing lake. It was awarded Fenland's best kept village in 1993. The Coates, later Milnes Coates, baronetcy, of Helperby Hall in Helperby in the North Riding of the County of York, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Major Sir Edward Coates, 1st Baronet, DL (25 February 1853 – 14 August 1921), was a British stockbroker and politician. Early life Sir Edward Coates was born in 1853. His father, John Coates, was a magistrate. He was educated at Marlborough College. Career Coates was a member of the city stockbroking firm of Coates and Son.Obituary, ''The Times'', 15 August 1921. In 1903 he was elected Conservative Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Lewisham. When that constituency was abolished in 1918 he won the new seat of Lewisham West which he held until his death. Derek Coates (born 1972) is an English rugby union player who played at Full back. He is known for his spells with Blackheath and Westcombe Park, where thanks to his prowess with the boot he became one of the most prolific points scorers in National League 2 South history with over 1,000 points spread between the two clubs, and was also one of the most consistent scorers averaging 12 points a game. Benjamin Terrence Coates, Jr. (born August 16, 1969) is an American former football tight end who played in the National Football League for 10 seasons, primarily with the New England Patriots. He played college football at Livingstone and was selected by the Patriots in the fifth round of the 1991 NFL Draft, where spent all but one season of his professional career. In his final season, he was a member of the Baltimore Ravens. During his nine seasons with the Patriots, Coates was a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro. Arnold Coates (24 July 1936 – 25 February 2013) was an English leading amateur footballer active in the 1960s who played as a striker. Career Club career Coates played amateur football with Evenwood Town and Crook Town, scoring two goals in the final as they won the FA Amateur Cup in April 1962. He was also in Crook's 1959 FA Amateur Cup winning team in his first spell at the club. He turned professional with Queen of the South in 1963, scoring 25 goals in 48 appearances in the Scottish Football League over the next two seasons.
