Clunes, Victoria
Clunes is a town in Victoria, Australia, 36 kilometres north of Ballarat, in the Shire of Hepburn. At the 2016 census it had a population of 1,728. History Pre-colonial The Djadja Wurrung people were the first inhabitants of the region including the settlement which later became Clunes. Frontier war In December 1839, a group of Aboriginal men were given a mixture of plaster of Paris and flour by the cook of Glengower Station in an effort to poison them. In retaliation, the cook was speared to death, resulting in the Blood Hole massacre in which between six and ten Aboriginal people were killed. The Aboriginal people sought safety by diving into the waterhole and there they were shot, one at a time, as they came up for air. The place is still known as 'the Blood-Hole'. Discovery of gold The town was home to Victoria's first registered gold discovery made by William Campbell in 1850. This discovery was not made public until 1851. It was created by the Electoral Act Amendment Act 1888, taking effect at the 1889 elections. Clunes is a small hamlet, located on the west shore of Loch Lochy, less than 0.5 miles northeast of Bunarkaig in Inverness-shire, Scottish Highlands and is in the Highland council area of Scotland. Hazard's Pavilion was a large auditorium in Los Angeles, California, at the intersection of Fifth and Olive Streets. Showman George "Roundhouse" Lehman had planned to construct a large theatre center on the land he purchased at this location, but he went broke and the property was sold to the City Attorney (and soon to be Mayor), Henry T. Hazard. The venue was built in 1887 by architects Kysor, Morgan & Walls at a cost of $25,000, a large amount for the time, and seated up to 4,000 people (some sources say that seating could be up to 8,000; the building was divided into two galleries, and perhaps ''each'' accommodated 4,000). Alexander Sheriff de Moro Clunes (17 May 1912 – 13 March 1970) was an English actor and theatrical manager. Among the plays he presented were Christopher Fry's ''The Lady's Not For Burning''. He gave the actor and dramatist Peter Ustinov his first break with his production ''The House of Regrets''. His film career was brief, but varied. He played Hastings in Laurence Olivier's ''Richard III'' (1955), and also appeared in wartime films such as ''One of Our Aircraft Is Missing'' (1942), although he was in fact a conscientious objector. He also appeared in ''The Adventures of Quentin Durward'' (1955). Clunes' later stage work included succeeding Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins in the stage musical ''My Fair Lady'' in 1959.
