Club Filter Melbourne
Club Filter, based upstairs at the Lounge bar and nightclub at 243 Swanston Street in the heart of Melbourne, holds the record as the city's (and also Australia's) longest-running techno music night, having run every Wednesday night from 1992 to 2003. Background Run by DJs asonRudeboy and Mad Rod, the night reflected global styles in techno and club music. Borrowing from the gay scene, they lent towards the obscure and taboo performing arts. The club always regularly had shows and live performances from electro poets to male strippers and drag shows. Early on pursuing a more acid house sound, pre-nascent hardcore techno and drum & bass, then filtering across into the sounds of Detroit, Chicago, New York, Berlin, Cologne, London, Sweden, Scotland, and Melbourne. Swanston Street
Swanston Street is a major thoroughfare in the centre of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is one of the main streets of the Melbourne central business district and was laid out in 1837 as part of the original Hoddle Grid. The street vertically bisects Melbourne's city centre and is famous as the world's busiest tram corridor, for its heritage buildings and as a shopping strip. Swanston Street runs roughly north–south in-between Russell Street to the east and Elizabeth Street to the west. To the south it becomes St Kilda Road after the intersection with Flinders Street, whilst the road's northern end is in the suburb of Carlton at Melbourne Cemetery. Lenny Dee (born 1968) is the performing name of Leonard Didesiderio, a DJ based in New York City. Starting as a house DJ in the 1980s, Dee quickly moved towards harder sounds such as techno and gabber. He set up the well respected record label Industrial Strength in 1991. Early life Leonard Didesiderio was born in 1968. He grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn and became a DJ in his teens, when he started working at the local roller disco. Taking the DJ name Lenny Dee, he made his first record in 1985. He started playing house music and developed a rivalry with Frankie Bones, another young DJ. Tommy Musto told the two to work together and they started music under the name Looney Tunes. Their first record sold 15,000 copies and they were invited to England to play at raves. Stacey Pullen is an American techno musician based in Detroit, Michigan, United States. Pullen was raised in Detroit, where he became interested in electronic music early in his life. He began working on the Detroit techno scene in 1990, studying with Derrick May and working with him on business ventures. He used the aliases Bango, Kosmik Messenger, X-Stacy and Silent Phase. Pullen's incorporation of house and garage with techno has been cited as an influence on later electronic artists. Musical style Pullen's music direction was strongly inspired by Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, collectively referred to as the Belleville Three. Underground Resistance (commonly abbreviated to UR) are an American musical collective from Detroit, Michigan. Producing primarily Detroit techno since 1990 with a grungy four-track musical aesthetic, they are also renowned for their militant political and anti-corporate ethos. History First formed in 1989 by "Mad" Mike Banks, Jeff Mills, and Robert Hood.
