Club Ciclista De San Sebastián
Club Ciclista de San Sebastián was a cycling club based in San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain. In 1909 the football section won the Copa del Rey. A few months after this victory, the players who had won the tournament founded the club that would later become Real Sociedad. History The San Sebastián Cycling Club was founded in February 1907 as a sports club dedicated to the practice of cycling, which had a great following in the city at that time. The main promoter of this hobby was Julián Comet, a French citizen who had settled in the city at the end of the 19th century. Comet was a great lover of cycling and he was the driving force behind the first, but short-lived, velodrome in the city, the Atocha Velodrome, installed in 1906, where the world cycling figures of the time would pass. The 1909 Copa del Rey was the 7th staging of the Copa del Rey, the Spanish football cup competition. The competition started on 4 April 1909, and concluded on 8 April 1909, with the final, held at the O'Donnell, in Madrid, in which Club Ciclista de San Sebastián lifted the trophy for the first time ever with a 3–1 victory over Español Madrid. The Basque goalscorers were George McGuinness, Charles Simmons and Miguel Sena. Club Ciclista de San Sebastián are the predecessors of Real Sociedad. After winning the cup trophy, on 7 September 1909 the players of Club Ciclista founded a new in club in San Sebastián, called Vasconia, later changing the name to Real Sociedad. Atotxa Stadium
Atotxa ( es, Atocha) was a association football, football stadium in San Sebastián, Spain. It was the home ground of Real Sociedad until 1993 when it was replaced by Anoeta Stadium. It had superseded Ondarreta Stadium 80 years earlier. It had a capacity of 17,000 spectators. History The Municipal Stadium of Atocha was the second stadium that Real Sociedad had in their history, preceded by Ondarreta Stadium, Ondarreta, located in the neighborhood of the old town of San Sebastián. Later the team moved to the Eguia neighborhood. The stadium of Atocha was constructed in the grounds of an old velodrome, built in 1888. The foundation aims to build an exhaustive archive of football-related information from around the world. Club Español de Madrid was a Spanish football club based in Madrid. The club was originally formed in 1901 after a conflict between Sky Football members caused some of them to leave and create a new club. Español de Madrid collapsed in the summer of 1903, but was refounded a few months later by players from a split of Madrid FC. Español de Madrid was subsequently the Campeonato Regional Centro champions in both 1904 and 1909, and reached three Copa del Rey finals in 1904, 1909 and 1910, which all ended in losses. Campo de O'Donnell was a multi-use stadium in Madrid, Spain. The stadium should not be confused with Campo de O'Donnell (Atlético Madrid), which shared the same name and was situated away on the same boulevard. It was initially a field (campo) in the area of O'Donnell, next to the main boulevard called Calle de O'Donnell. It became the home stadium of Real Madrid in 1912. The capacity of the stadium was 5,000 spectators. In 1923, Real Madrid moved on to Campo de Ciudad Lineal, and Campo de O'Donnell was closed. George McGuinness
George McGuinness (6 October 1887 – 1 July 1916) was an English footballer who played as a forward for Spanish club Real Sociedad. He is most known for his goals at the 1909 Copa del Rey to help Club Ciclista win the title for the first time, netting a then national record of six in a single tournament including a hat-trick against Athletic Club and the opening goal of the final. Playing career George McGuinness was born on 6 October 1887 in Liverpool as the second of three sons born to Edward, a private school teacher, and Catherine, and attended St Francis Xavier's College. In 1908, at the age of 21, McGuinness arrived in San Sebastián, where he taught English to Pedro Bea, the goalkeeper of the newly founded Club Ciclista. Knowing that the young Englishman was a passionate footballer, Bea encouraged him to join the team. A hat-trick or hat trick is the achievement of a generally positive feat three times in a match, or another achievement based on the number three. Origin The term first appeared in 1858 in cricket, to describe H. H. Stephenson taking three wickets with three consecutive deliveries. Fans held a collection for Stephenson, and presented him with a hat bought with the proceeds. The term was used in print for the first time in 1865 in the ''Chelmsford Chronicle''.
