Clouds Without Water
''Clouds without Water'' is a poetry collection by Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), an English author, occult magician, mountaineer and founder of the religious philosophy of Thelema. ''Clouds without Water'' was one of many of Crowley's eccentric works published in his lifetime and was first issued in 1909. The title comes from a passage in Jude 1:12-13 which is quoted at the beginning of the book: "Clouds they are without water; carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever" As with many other books of Crowley's, such as ''The Scented Garden of Abdullah'' and ''Alice, an Adultury'', this work was first published under the pseudonym "the Rev. Aleister Crowley
Aleister Crowley (; born Edward Alexander Crowley; 12 October 1875 – 1 December 1947) was an English occultist, ceremonial magician, poet, painter, novelist, and mountaineer. He founded the religion of Thelema, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Æon of Horus in the early 20th century. A prolific writer, he published widely over the course of his life. Born to a wealthy family in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, Crowley rejected his parents' fundamentalist Christian Plymouth Brethren faith to pursue an interest in Western esotericism. The ''Collected Works of Aleister Crowley 1905–1907'' was originally a trilogy of books published by Aleister Crowley during his early career as student of magick. ''Collected Works'' Volume I 1905 The first volume was published in 1905 but contains his poems and plays between 1898 and 1902 and is what he admits to be his juvenilia. It is noted at the beginning: ''The great bulk of MSS. from 1887 to 1897 have been sedulously sought out and destroyed. They were very voluminous.'' CONTENTS Most of these early works show little in the way of magic but are an introduction to Crowley's knowledge of religion and mythology. ''The Stratagem and other Stories'' is a small book of short stories written by Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), occult magician, poet and self-proclaimed prophet of a new Æon. Contents The book was originally published in 1929 and one of a series of Crowley's works to be published by Mandrake Press after a period in which Crowley found it difficult to publish due both to his lack of funds, and his notoriety. Mandrake Press also published ''The Confessions of Aleister Crowley'' volumes I and II, and '' Moonchild''. Crowley published few collections of short stories, but the title story received such a good review from British novelist Joseph Conrad when he published it in ''The English Review'' that he thought it was a possible calling to conventional fame.
