Cloquet Public School District
Cloquet Public Schools (ISD94) is a school district headquartered in Cloquet, Minnesota. Ken Scarbrough served as superintendent until his retirement. Michael Cary became the superintendent in 2018. In 2020 the school district renewed his contract effective July 1 of that year, running until June 30, 2024. It is partially in Carlton County, where it serves almost all of Cloquet, all of Scanlon, and a portion of Big Lake. It also serves sections of St. Louis County. Cloquet, Minnesota
Cloquet ( ) is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States, at the junction of Interstate 35 and Minnesota State Highway 33. Part of the city lies within the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation and serves as one of the reservation's three administrative centers. The population was 12,568 at the 2020 census. History Cloquet began as a group of small settlements around three sawmills: Shaw Town, Nelson Town, and Johnson Town. These became known as Knife Falls after a local waterfall over sharp slate rocks, and later as Cloquet. The Ojibwe in the area called the area ''Mookomaan-onigamiing'', meaning "At the Knife Portage", as the portage to avoid Knife Falls connected the three communities. The area was platted in 1883 and the village of Cloquet was incorporated from the three settlements in 1884. It became a city with a mayor and city council in 1904. Carlton County is a county in the State of Minnesota, formed in 1857. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,207. Its county seat is Carlton. Part of the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation lies in northeastern Carlton County. Carlton County is part of the Duluth, MN- WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Scanlon is a city in Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 991 at the 2010 census. Interstate 35 and Carlton County Highway 45 (CR 45) are two of the main routes in Scanlon. Other main routes include Washington Avenue (CR 16) and County Road 61 (CR 61). Scanlon is located immediately east of the city of Cloquet; and 18 miles southwest of the city of Duluth. Big Lake is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Perch Lake Township, Carlton County, Minnesota, United States. Its population was 443 as of the 2010 census. Cloquet High School
Cloquet High School (CHS) is a high school in Cloquet in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Operated by Cloquet Public Schools, it serves approximately 700 students; a typical graduating class has 160 to 200 members. It has existed for over 100 years. The current building was built in 1969, with the old building then being turned into a middle school. That building was built in 1921 replacing an earlier school destroyed, along with much of the town, in the 1918 Cloquet fire. It serves almost all of Cloquet and all of Scanlon. Academics Curriculum requirements for the four core areas are as follows: three-and-a-half years of mathematics, four years of English, four years of social studies (including geography, world events, economics, US government, world and US history courses), and three years of science. Fond Du Lac Ojibwe School
Fond du Lac Ojibwe School is a Kâ12 tribal school in Cloquet, Minnesota. The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa operates the school and owns the facilities. It is affiliated with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). History In 1993 there was a campaign by parents trying to get the school to fire a White American teacher who was teaching a class on Ojibwe culture, even though she held fluency in the Ojibwe language and was married to an Ojibwe. The 2013 the federal sequester caused the BIE to decrease the school's budget by $410,000. Like other BIE schools it relies on funding from the federal government of the United States. The school reduced its academic support programs and increased class sizes. In an editorial, the ''Minneapolis Star-Tribune'', citing the "modern, spacious, and well-equipped" school facility, stated that "Fond du Lac Ojibwe School is an example of what a BIE school should look like."
