Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. The association also promotes Irish music and dance, as well as the Irish language. Clontarf, Dublin
Clontarf () is a largely affluent coastal suburb on the Northside of Dublin in the city's Dublin 3 postal district. Historically there were two centres of population, one on the coast towards the city, and the fishing village of Clontarf Sheds, further north on the coast at what is now Vernon Avenue. Clontarf has a range of commercial facilities in several locations, mainly centred on Vernon Avenue. It adjoins Fairview, Marino, Killester and Raheny. Clontarf is in the jurisdiction of Dublin City Council. Clontarf was a core site of the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, in which Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, defeated the Vikings of Dublin and their allies, the Irish of Leinster. This battle, which extended over a wide area, from modern Ballybough to Kilbarrack, at least, is seen as marking an end to the Irish-Viking Wars. Chris Barrett (Gaelic Footballer)
Chris Barrett is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Clontarf and, formerly, for the Mayo county team. He previously played for the Belmullet club in Mayo before moving to Dublin. He started at left corner back in the 2013 All-Ireland final where Mayo lost by a point to Dublin. He received his first all star at the 2017 All Star Awards, when he was named at right corner back. Jack McCaffrey (born 19 October 1993) is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Clontarf. Early and personal life His father Noel also represented Dublin in football. McCaffrey attended Belvedere College private school and studied medicine at University College Dublin (UCD) and graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery & Bachelor in the Art of Obstetrics. His classmates included Mark English, considered by Jerry Kiernan to be the country's "greatest talent" ever in middle-distance running. English issued a challenge to McCaffrey, himself considered football's fastest player, to take him on over 100 metres. McCaffrey is a qualified medical doctor. Jim Ronayne (born 28 February 1959) is a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Clontarf club and for the Dublin county team. Ronayne made his debut for the Dublin senior football team in the 1979 Leinster Senior Football Championship final against Offaly. He won an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medal in 1983 when a twelve-man Dublin team, dubbed the ‘Twelve Apostles’, defeated Galway in the final. In total he won four Leinster Senior Football Championship medals in 1979, 1983, 1984, and 1985, and an under 21 Leinster Football Championship medal in 1980.
