Cloke Plaza Bell
The Cloke Plaza bell is a bell located on the University of Maine campus in Orono, Maine in the Cloke Plaza. It is located near Neville Hall, Barrows Hall, and the East Annex Building. The bell rings every hour on the hour, the number of rings corresponding to the hour. The bell that was used is called the Wingate bell and was a bell that had been previously in use on the University of Maine Orono campus at Wingate Hall. This was also the site of an accident reported in the ''Bangor Daily News'' in 2009. Bell
A bell is a directly struck idiophone percussion instrument. Most bells have the shape of a hollow cup that when struck vibrates in a single strong strike tone, with its sides forming an efficient resonator. The strike may be made by an internal "clapper" or "uvula", an external hammer, or—in small bells—by a small loose sphere enclosed within the body of the bell (jingle bell). Bells are usually cast from bell metal (a type of bronze) for its resonant properties, but can also be made from other hard materials. This depends on the function. Orono, Maine
Orono () is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. Located on the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers, it was first settled by American colonists in 1774. They named it in honor of Chief Joseph Orono, a sachem of the indigenous Penobscot nation who long occupied this territory. In the nineteenth century, the town became a center of the lumber industry. Sawmills on the rivers were powered by the water, and logs were floated downriver on the Penobscot for shipping and export from coastal ports. Since 1865 it has been the location of the University of Maine, established as a land-grant institution and the state's flagship educational institution.
