''Clivia'' is a 1933 operetta by Nico Dostal to a libretto by Charles Amberg. The premiere was 23 December 1933 at the Berlin Theater am Nollendorfplatz. The plot concerns the adventures of a film star, Clivia Gray, in the South American republic of Boliguay and her romance with the Boliguayan president. Nico Dostal
Nico Dostal (full name: Nikolaus Josef Michael Dostal) (27 November 1895 – 27 October 1981) was an Austrian composer who later specialised in operetta and film music. Life Dostal was born in Korneuburg, Lower Austria, and was the nephew of composer Hermann Dostal. He initially studied law at the University of Vienna, but turned to studying music at the Academy for Church Music in Klosterneuburg, and made a name for himself when his ''Great Mass in D major'' premiered in Linz in 1913. After participating in World War I, Dostal worked as the theatre Kapellmeister in Innsbruck, St. Pölten, Vienna, Chernivtsi and Salzburg, before moving to Berlin in 1924, where he turned his hand to secular music. He worked in music publishing and as a freelance arranger for Oscar Straus, Franz Lehár and Robert Stolz, among others. Theater Am Nollendorfplatz
The Metropol, formerly Neues Schauspielhaus ( en, New Theatre), at 5 Nollendorfplatz in the Schöneberg district of Berlin was built in 1905 as a theatre, with a separate concert hall (the Mozartsaal) above, in the then-fashionable Art Nouveau style. In 1911 the Mozartsaal was converted into a cinema with 925 seats. From the beginning of World War I the theatre turned into an operetta stage until in 1927, Erwin Piscator and Tilla Durieux opened their ''Theater am Nollendorfplatz'' in the building.There was cinema just across the road at number 4, called the Ufa-Theater am Nollendorfplatz from 1924 to 1927, with which it is sometimes confused. Piscator created critical performances by playwrights like Ernst Toller and Walter Mehring, with artists like Bertolt Brecht, George Grosz and John Heartfield at times working with him. Lillie Claus
Lillie Claus-Dostal (1905–2000) was an Austrian lyric coloratura opera and operetta singer. Biography She received a musical education in her youth (vocals, piano, dance school). When she was 16 she entered the Vienna Academy of Music. She debuted as Papagena in Mozart's ''The Magic Flute'' at the Vienna State Opera. After engagements at several theatres, she returned to the Vienna State Opera. There, she heard the composer Nico Dostal was in search a leading singer for his operetta "Clivia". On 23 December 1933, she took part in the premiere in the Berlin theatre on Nollendorfplatz. On 30 November 1934, she sang the 'Lied der Lulu' (part of the five-movement concert suite version of Alban Berg's opera ''Lulu'') at the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden under Erich Kleiber. In the ensuing period Lillie Claus focused increasingly on operetta. Anneliese Rothenberger
Anneliese Rothenberger (19 June 191924 May 2010) was a German operatic soprano who had an active international performance career which spanned from 1942 to 1983. She specialized in the lyric coloratura soprano repertoire, and was particularly admired for her interpretations of the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Richard Strauss. Life and career Rothenberger was born in Mannheim, Germany. She studied with Erika Müller, and took up her first engagement in Koblenz in 1942. In 1946, Günther Rennert offered her a job at the Hamburg Opera House, where she sang in Rennert's now famous production of Alban Berg's ''Lulu'' twenty years later, a role she would also perform at the Munich Opera Festival, under the direction of Christoph von Dohnányi. 1954 saw her make her debut at the Salzburg Festival, and she appeared in Rolf Liebermann's ''Schule der Frauen'', three years later.
