Clive Stephen
Clive Travers Stephen (10 November 1889–1957) was an Australian sculptor, painter in water-colour and oils, printmaker, and medical doctor. Early life Clive Stephen was born in Caulfield, Victoria, Caulfield on 10 November 1889, the son of Blanche (née Travers) and Sidney James Henry Stephen, a solicitor, of 'The Pines' in Middle Crescent, Brighton, Victoria, Brighton. Physician Stephen studied medicine at the University of Melbourne in Ormond College, entered third year in 1912, and attained the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Third Class Honours in 1914. He was resident medical officer of the The Alfred Hospital, Alfred Hospital World War I Stephen enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps in England and was posted to the 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, near Boulogne, in the north of France. Caulfield, Victoria
Caulfield is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Glen Eira local government area. Caulfield recorded a population of 5,748 at the 2021 census. It is bounded by Kooyong Road in the west, Glen Eira Road in the north, Glen Huntly Road in the south and Booran Road in the east. Ian Fairweather
Ian Fairweather (29 September 189120 May 1974) was a Scottish painter resident in Australia for much of his life. He combined western and Asian influences in his work. Life Ian Fairweather was born in Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, Scotland in 1891. His parents returned to India when he was a baby, leaving him in the care of a great-aunt, and he did not see them again until he was 10 years old. He received early schooling at Victoria College in Jersey, in London, and in Champéry, Switzerland, before attending officer training school at Belfast where his rank was second lieutenant. During World War I he was captured by the Germans in France at the Battle of Mons and spent the next four years in prisoner-of-war camps. Abstract art uses visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Henri Gaudier-Brzeska
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (né Gaudier; 4 October 1891 – 5 June 1915) was a French artist and sculptor who developed a rough-hewn, primitive style of direct carving. Jacob Epstein
Sir Jacob Epstein (10 November 1880 – 21 August 1959) was an American-British sculptor who helped pioneer modern sculpture. He was born in the United States, and moved to Europe in 1902, becoming a British subject in 1911. He often produced controversial works which challenged ideas on what was appropriate subject matter for public artworks. He also made paintings and drawings, and often exhibited his work. Early life and education Epstein's parents, Max and Mary Epstein, were Polish Jewish refugees, living on New York's Lower East Side.
