Clive Spate
Clive Spate (born 16 January 1952) is a British game show contestant. He was the winner of the eighth series of ''Countdown'' and has won many other TV quizzes, including the 2003 series '' Grand Slam'', a contest between previous quiz show champions which also featured Olav Bjortomt, Mark Labbett, Graham Nash and David Edwards, among others. He appeared on '' Who Wants to be a Millionaire?'' (Series 15, Episode 13), broadcast on 27 March 2004, where he won £125,000. Spate is also a former tournament Scrabble player. He was the top rated UK player in 1991, 1994 and 1995. He competed at the World Scrabble Championship in 1993, finishing ninth out of sixty-four. A game show is a genre of broadcast viewing entertainment (radio, television, internet, stage or other) where contestants compete for a reward. ''Countdown'' is a British game show involving word and number tasks that began airing in November 1982. It is broadcast on Channel 4 and is currently presented by Colin Murray, assisted by Rachel Riley, with resident lexicographer Susie Dent. It was the first programme to be aired on Channel 4, and 85 series have been broadcast since its debut on 2 November 1982. With over 7,000 episodes, ''Countdown'' is one of Britain's longest-running game shows, along with the original French version, ''Des chiffres et des lettres'' (Numbers & Letters), which has been running on French television continuously since 1965. Grand Slam (UK Game Show)
Grand Slam is a television quiz show first created for Britain's Channel 4 in 2003. In its first and only series in the UK, the main host was Carol Vorderman. She was joined in the studio by analyst James Richardson. The off-camera "Questioner" was Nicholas Rowe. The contestants taking part, all of them previous quiz show winners, were: Dee Voce, Geoff Owen, Olav Bjortomt, David Edwards, Mark Labbett, Clive Spate, Melanie Beaumont, Peter Lee, Gavin Fuller, David Stainer, Graham Nash, Michael Penrice, Michelle Hogan, Laura Richardson, Said Khan, and Duncan Bickley (who lost £218,000 on an episode of ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'' in 2000). Olav Bjortomt
Stein Olav Bjortomt (pronounced Bortom) (born 13 December 1978 in Eastbourne) is an English international quiz player, four-time world champion (2003, 2015, 2018, 2019) and three time individual European champion (2010, 2014, 2015). He is the star player of the world's most successful quizzing clubs, Broken Hearts, with which he has won several European championships. He writes questions for ''University Challenge'' and '' The Chase''. In contrast to the other two full-time professionals of Team England Pat Gibson and Kevin Ashman he has not done as well both in domestic competitions, with only a second place in the individual British championships 2007 to his credit (though he has won the pairs competition) and as a TV candidate, a second place in the ''Fifteen to One'' series of 2002 being his best result. Mark Labbett
Mark Andrew Labbett (born 15 August 1965), also known by his professional nickname The Beast, is an English quizzer and television personality. Since 2009 he has been one of the "chasers" on the ITV game show '' The Chase'' as "The Beast" and from late February 2022 rejoined the Australian version of the show. He previously appeared between 2013 and 2015 on GSN's American version as their sole chaser; between 2016 and 2020 as one of six chasers on the Australian version; and as one of four chasers in the second season of ABC's American revival. Labbett has appeared as a contestant on several other television quiz shows and is a regular in quizzing competitions. Graham Nash (Countdown)
Graham Nash (born 25 December 1979) is Countdown's 43rd Champion and the 11th Champion of Champions. His current record stands at 16 wins out of 16; one of only two unbeaten champions in the show's history - the other one being Nic Brown. He later appeared on Grand Slam, losing to ''Dee Voce''. Countdown Graham made his debut on Countdown on 20 July 2000 and won the maximum eight consecutive heat games making him the number one seed. However his points total was beaten by David Williams and he was knocked down to second seed. However Williams fell in the semi-final, while Nash won his match against Clare Wright. This set up a final between Graham and Matthew Turner. It was a close and nervous final, as both players had numerous words disallowed. David Edwards (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Contestant)
David Edwards (born 1947) is a Welsh physics teacher, best known as a TV quiz contestant. On 21 April 2001 he became the first man to win the million pounds in the UK version of ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'' and only the second person after Judith Keppel. He competed in both series of ''Are You an Egghead?'', reaching the last 16 in 2008, and the final in 2009, where he lost to fellow ''Millionaire'' winner Pat Gibson. ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'' is a British television quiz show, created by David Briggs for ITV. The World Scrabble Championship (WSC) is the most-prestigious title in competitive English-language Scrabble. It was held in every odd year from 1991 to 2013. Mark Nyman
Mark Nyman (born 14 October 1966) is an English professional Scrabble player originally from London, England and now a resident in Cheshire. At the end of 2002, he was rated 205 and was top-rated in the ABSP ratings. As at 7 September 2015 he is rated 200. His 27 consecutive tournament game wins is an ABSP record. He is most widely known as the first (and, until Craig Beevers' victory in 2014, only) British player to win the World Scrabble Championship, which he accomplished in 1993. He married in 2004 and has two children, Max and Kizzy. Nyman played Canadian Joel Wapnick in the World Scrabble Championship 1993 final, in which he came back from 2-1 behind to win 3-2, including winning one game having been 174 behind. National Scrabble Championship (UK)
The UK National Scrabble Championship (NSC) is a British national Scrabble tournament that has been held annually (except 1995, 2020 and 2021) since its inception in 1971. It was formerly organised by Mattel, the copyright owners of Scrabble in the UK, and has been organised by the Association of British Scrabble Players (ABSP) since 2014.
