Clifton (Mayfield) railway station was opened on 3 May 1852 by the North Staffordshire Railway at Clifton on the southern fringes of Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Originally named ''Clifton'', it was renamed ''Clifton (Mayfield)'' on 22 August 1893, and was known as ''Clifton for Mayfield'' in some timetables. It was on a branch from Rocester to Ashbourne and in 1899 it was met by the Ashbourne Line built by the London and North Western Railway from Buxton Buxton is a spa town in the Borough of High Peak, Derbyshire, England. Clifton, Derbyshire
Clifton is a village in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire, England. The village is situated about 1.2 miles (2 km) south west of Ashbourne, and is close to the border with Staffordshire. The appropriate civil parish is called Clifton and Compton. The population of this civil parish at the 2011 Census was 500. History and notable buildings Margery Bower is a round barrow assumed to date from the Bronze Age. It lies on the southern side of the village on the road to Snelston. Clifton Hall was built in the late 18th century, altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It stands close to the centre of the village on Chapel Lane at . Ashbourne Line
The Ashbourne line was a railway from Buxton via Ashbourne to Uttoxeter. It was built by the London and North Western Railway using a section of the Cromford and High Peak Railway (C&HPR) and it joined the North Staffordshire Railway at Ashbourne, proceeding to Uttoxeter with a junction onto the main line at Rocester. Origins Although the country between Buxton and Ashbourne was sparsely populated, and the terrain immensely difficult, there were a number of motivations for its construction. Ashbourne was one of the few large settlements in the area without a railway connection until the North Staffordshire Railway built its branch from the Churnet Valley line in 1852. Cromford And High Peak Railway
The Cromford and High Peak Railway (C&HPR) was a standard-gauge line between the Cromford Canal wharf at High Peak Junction and the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge. The railway, which was completed in 1831, was built to carry minerals and goods through the hilly rural terrain of the Peak District within Derbyshire, England. Buxton railway station serves the Peak District town of Buxton in Derbyshire, England. It is managed and served by Northern.
