Clifford Clifton
Sir Clifford Clifton (1626 - June 1670) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1659. Early life Clifford was baptised on 22 June 1626. He was the son of Sir Gervase Clifton, 1st Baronet of Clifton-on Trent, Nottinghamshire and, his second wife, Lady Frances Clifford, a daughter of Francis Clifford, 4th Earl of Cumberland. He was admitted at Gray's Inn in 1647. Career In 1659, he was elected Member of Parliament for East Retford in the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was commissioner for militia for Nottinghamshire in March 1660 and became JP for Nottinghamshire in July 1660, remaining in the post until his death. In 1661 he was elected MP for East Retford again for the Cavalier Parliament. He was captain in the horse volunteers in 1661 and became Deputy Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire and commissioner for assessment for Nottinghamshire from 1661 until his death. The House of Commons of England was the lower house of the Parliament of England (which incorporated Wales) from its development in the 14th century to the union of England and Scotland in 1707, when it was replaced by the House of Commons of Great Britain after the 1707 Act of Union was passed in both the English and Scottish parliaments at the time. In 1801, with the union of Great Britain and Republic of Ireland, Ireland, that house was in turn replaced by the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Clifton Baronets
Two unrelated baronetcies have been created in the surname of Clifton. The Clifton Baronetcy, of Clifton in the County of Nottinghamshire, was created in the Baronetage of England on 22 May 1611 for Sir Gervas Clifton, of Clifton Hall, Nottingham. This Clifton family took their name from the settlement on the Bank of the River Trent at Clifton, Nottinghamshire, which they made their home at the time of the Norman Conquest. The family was much involved in the events of its times. Several members of the family served from the 13th century as High Sheriff of the counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Sir John Clifton was slain fighting for the King at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1402. Sir Gervase Clifton was captured and beheaded following the Battle of Tewkesbury during the Wars of the Roses in 1471. William Cartwright (1634 – 15 April 1676) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1659. Cartwright was the son of John Cartwright of Bloxham, Oxfordshire, and was baptised at Aynho on 29 March 1634. He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, on 5 April 1650. In 1659, he was elected Member of Parliament for East Retford. Cartwright died at the age of 41. Francis Wheeler (admiral)
Sir Francis Wheler (sometimes spelt Wheeler) (1656 – 19 February 1694) was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the Nine Years' War. Wheler spent the early part of his career in the Mediterranean, eventually being promoted to command his own ships, and being particularly active against the Algerine and Salé pirates that infested the region. He went on to serve in British waters, and was knighted by King James II. Wheler remained in the navy after the Glorious Revolution and his continued good service led to the command of a squadron. He fought at Beachy Head and Barfleur, and in 1692 was promoted to flag rank. He took a fleet out to attack French possessions in the Caribbean and North America, but his attack on Martinique ended in failure when large numbers of the troops involved became sick.
