Cliff Brewery
The Cliff Brewery is a Grade II listed former brewery in Ipswich, England. The building dates to 1896 and was designed by William Bradford. Location The building is located on Cliff Lane, near the Ipswich wet dock. History The business that became Cliff Brewery was started in 1723 (in Kings Quay Street, Harwich) by Thomas Cobbold and is believed to be the second oldest independent brewery in England. Thomas senior started to transport fresh water from Holywells by barge to Harwich as the spring water was better than the brackish water available in Harwich. His son Thomas Cobbold (1708–1767) then relocated the brewery to Ipswich where the original building stood above the quays of the River Orwell since 1746. The current building of 1896 is a tower brewery by William Bradford. It became a Grade II listed building in 1989; the listing includes the interior fixtures and fittings. William Bradford (architect)
William Bradford (1845-1919) was a prolific architect of breweries. Born in 1845 in Devon, son of Robert Bradford 1818-1875 (a builder). Responsible for building or altering 70 breweries his first commission was a small addition to the "Hope Brewery" in East Grinstead (1879). Died at home in Surbiton on 2 February 1919. He married Hannah Laura Barrat (1848-1893) on 23 April 1872 in St Pancras, London England. William Bradford (1845-1919) worked in the brewing industry from the late 1860s and established his architectural practice at 40 King William Street, London EC4, in 1879, moving to Carlton Chambers, 12 Regent Street, London W1, in early 1882. Bradford's works included building or altering over 70 breweries and maltings throughout the country, although the majority were in the south of England. Brewery
A brewery or brewing company is a business that makes and sells beer. The place at which beer is commercially made is either called a brewery or a beerhouse, where distinct sets of brewing equipment are called plant. The commercial brewing of beer has taken place since at least 2500 BC; in ancient Mesopotamia, brewers derived social sanction and divine protection from the goddess Ninkasi. John Cobbold (1746–1835)
John Cobbold (1746–1835) was a prominent business man in Ipswich. At the age of 22 he started running Cliff Brewery, part of the family brewing business established by his grandfather, Thomas Cobbold (1680–1752). More than thirty men of the Cobbold family have been named John, but he was known as "Big John". He not only greatly expanded the family business but also had 22 children. His father Thomas Cobbold (1708–1767) left monetary sums to be left to his sons and daughters, in trust to his wife, Sarah Cobbold. She leased the family brewery in Harwich to John and his partner Charles Cox. In 1773 he married Elizabeth Wilkinson with whom he had 15 children before her death in 1790. Tower Breweries
A tower brewery is a distinct form of brewery, identified by its external buildings being arranged in the form of a vertical tower. The purpose of a tower brewery is to allow this multi-stage flow process to continue by gravity, rather than lifting or pumping the brew liquor between stages. Once the bulk raw materials, water and barley malt, are first raised to the top of the tower, they can then mostly flow downwards without requiring further pumping. Tower breweries developed in the late Victorian period, the first examples from around 1870, the majority in the 1880s. At this time steam power was available, but not electricity. Powering a single large pumping step was practical, but multiple small pumps around a building would be much less so. The buildings of a tower brewery are arranged as a tower with around six floors.
