Los Contemporáneos
''Los Contemporáneos'' (which means "The Contemporaries" in English) can refer to a Mexican modernist group, active in the late 1920s and early 1930s, as well as to the literary magazine which served as the group's mouthpiece and artistic vehicle from 1928 to 1931. In a way, they were opposed to stridentism. The group had its origins in friendships and literary collaborations that were formed among students attending Mexico City's elite National Preparatory School; that is where founding members José Gorostiza, Carlos Pellicer, Bernardo Ortiz de Montellano, Enrique González Rojo, and Jaime Torres Bodet met for the first time. This core group would all go on to attend together the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, specifically its Faculty of Jurisprudence, where they would come under the influence of professors Antonio Caso and Enrique González Martínez, both of whom were associated with the literary society Ateneo de México. Celestino Gorostiza
Celestino Gorostiza Alcalá (born January 31, 1904 in Villahermosa – January 11, 1967 in Mexico City) was a Mexican theater and cine playwright, director and dramatist. Biography Gorostiza, son of Celestino Gorostiza and Elvira Alcalá de Gorostiza, was the older brother of José Gorostiza. He was co-founder of the '' Ulises'' theater (1927-1928) and of the ''Orientación'' theater (1932), both in Mexico City Gorostiza was married to Araceli Otero Mena, older sister of Clementina Otero. Araceli gave birth to their daughter Paloma Gorostiza Otero. He was a numbered member of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua and a member of the Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas, as well as director of the department of theater at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. Biography Officially registered as Gilberto Estrada, son of Margarita Estrada from Michoacán, Gilberto Owen was born in Rosario, Sinaloa (May 13, 1904). Xavier Villaurrutia y González (27 March 1903 – 25 December 1950) was a Mexican poet, playwright and literary critic whose most famous works are the short theatrical dramas called ''Autos profanos'', compiled in the work ''Poesía y teatro completos'', published in 1953. Early life Xavier Villaurrutia was born in Mexico City in 1903. He studied in the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria (National Preparatory School) and in the Escuela de Jurisprudencia (Jurisprudence School). The Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL, en, National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature), located in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, is the Mexican institution in charge of coordinating artistic and cultural activities (both at the political and the educational level) in the country. On November 23, 1946, president Miguel Alemán Valdés proposed the creation of the INBA, and it was formally opened on 1 January 1947, as a branch of the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). The first head of the INBA was Carlos Chávez, who created a new orchestra for the Conservatory, the current Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional.
