Clement Akpamgbo
Clement Akpamgbo, SAN was a Nigerian lawyer who was Attorney-General of the federation between 1991 and 1993 during Nigeria's failed transition from military to democratic government. Before his ministerial appointment, he was the president of the Nigerian Bar Association. In 1993, Akpamgbo sided with the camp that supported the suspension of presidential elections on June 12, 1993, basing his argument on an order from procured by the Arthur Nzeribe-led Association of a Better Nigeria from an Abuja High Court halting the conduct of the election. Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is a title that may be conferred on legal practitioners in Nigeria of not less than ten years' standing and who have distinguished themselves in the legal profession. It is the equivalent of the rank of Queen's Counsel in the United Kingdom, from which Nigeria became History of Nigeria#Independence, independent in 1960 (History of Nigeria#First Republic, Republic 1963), as well as in South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Canada (except Ontario and Quebec). The Third Republic was the planned republican government of Nigeria in 1993 which was to be governed by the Third Republican constitution. Founded (1993) The constitution of the Third Republic was drafted in 1989. General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), the military head of state, promised to end military rule by 1990. This date was subsequently pushed back to 1993. In the spring of 1989, IBB lifted the ban on political activity, which had been in place since the coup of 1983. The conference established two political parties: the center-right National Republican Convention (NRC) and the center-left Social Democratic Party (SDP). 1993 Nigerian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Nigeria on 12 June 1993, the first since the 1983 military coup ended the country's Second Republic. The elections were the outcome of a transitional process to civilian rule spearheaded by the military ruler, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB). The unofficial result of the election – though not declared by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) – indicated a victory for Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who defeated Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC). The winner of the election was thus never declared as the elections were annulled by IBB, citing electoral irregularities. The annulment led to protests and political unrest, including the resignation of IBB and a weak interim civilian government, and culminated in the continuation of military rule in the country with Sani Abacha ascending to power as the military head of state via a bloodless coup later in the year. Francis Arthur Nzeribe (2 November 1938 – 8 May 2022) was a Nigerian politician who was Senator for the Orlu Senatorial constituency in Imo State from October 1983 to December 1983 and May 1999 to May 2007 on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) slate.
