Cleghorn Lakes Wilderness
The Cleghorn Lakes Wilderness is a wilderness area in the southern Mojave Desert. It is located northeast of Twentynine Palms, California, and north of Joshua Tree National Park. It is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Named for the dry lakes found at the center of the wilderness area, this area has a variety of natural resources. The east portion is mountainous while the west portion is a vast alluvial fan and bajada. Elevations range from at the desert floor to the rugged Bullion Mountains, which rise more than across a stretch. Natural history Wildlife includes Desert bighorn sheep on the slopes, and desert tortoise in the valley floor and bajada habitats. Native plants include: Barrel cactus, and Smoke trees (''Psorothamnus spinosus'')" in some bajadas. The Cleghorn Lakes offer occasional spring wildflower displays. Barrel Cactus
Barrel cacti are various members of the two genera ''Echinocactus'' and ''Ferocactus'', endemic to the deserts of Southwestern North America southward to north central Mexico. Some of the largest specimens are found in the Sonoran Desert in Southern Arizona . Description Some species of barrel cactus reach over in height at maturity, and have been known to reach in some regions. The ribs are numerous and pronounced, and the spines are long and can range in color from yellow to tan to red, depending on the age of the plant and the species. Flowers appear at the top of the plant only after many years. The barrel cactus can live to be over 100 years old. Barrel cactus buds typically start to bloom in April with a bright yellow or orange flower. Pink and red varieties also exist but occur less frequently. Twentynine Palms (also known as 29 Palms) is a city in San Bernardino County, California. Twentynine Palms serves as one of the entry points to Joshua Tree National Park. History Twentynine Palms was named for the palm trees found there in 1852 by Col. Henry Washington while surveying the San Bernardino base line. A post office was established in 1927.
