Cleft Island (Antarctica)
Cleft Island is a small island to the north of the Bølingen Islands, lying southeast of Lichen Island in southern Prydz Bay. The island is split by a deep channel about wide. The island was plotted from air photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936–37, and called Lorten by Norwegian cartographers. Bølingen Islands
The Bølingen Islands are a group of small islands, in extent, lying immediately off the north side of the Publications Ice Shelf in the southeastern part of Prydz Bay. They were discovered and roughly charted by Captain Klarius Mikkelsen in February 1935, charted in greater detail by Norwegian cartographers from aerial photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition Lars is a common male name in Scandinavian countries. Lichen Island
Lichen Island is a small island lying north of the Bølingen Islands and north-west of Cleft Island in southern Prydz Bay, Antarctica. Prydz Bay
Prydz Bay is a deep embayment of Antarctica between the Lars Christensen Coast and Ingrid Christensen Coast. The Bay is at the downstream end of a giant glacial drainage system that originates in the East Antarctic interior. The Lambert Glacier flows from Lambert Graben into the Amery Ice Shelf on the south-west side of Prydz Bay. Other major glaciers drain into the southern end of the Amery Ice Shelf at 73° S where the marine part of the system starts at the modern grounding zone. The Amery Ice Shelf extends about 550 km north of the Lambert Glacier grounding zone and occupies a valley between 80 and 200 km wide. Depths to the bed beneath the Amery Ice Shelf are poorly known in detail but it is clearly over-deepened, reaching around -2500 m MSL close to the grounding zone. Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions
The Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE ) is the historical name for the Australian Antarctic Program (AAp) administered for Australia by the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). History Australia has had a long involvement in south polar regions since as early as Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition in 1911. Further Australian exploration of the Antarctic continent was conducted during the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE), which was conducted over the years 1929–1931. The Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions were established in 1947 with expeditions to Macquarie Island and Heard Island. MV ''Nella Dan'' was one of the famous 'Dan' ships of the Danish J. Lauritzen A/S Lines that were almost synonymous with ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions) shipping through the early years of Australia's official Antarctic program. Others in the fleet included '' Kista Dan'', ''Magga Dan'' and ''Thala Dan''. Service Commissioned by Lauritzen with considerable input from the Australian Antarctic Division, ''Nella Dan'' was named in honour of Nel Law, wife of the AAD Director of the time, Phillip Law. Built by the Aarlborg Shipyard Pty Ltd in 1961, she incorporated all the features of her older sisters, ''Thala Dan'', ''Kista Dan'' and ''Magga Dan''. An ice breaker stern, ice fins and ice knife were becoming regular features, but a novel addition was the double hull in the engine room and part of the holds.
