Claypans is a locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. Claypans had a Methodist church in 1928. The school opened in 1907 and closed in 1947. The Division of Barker is an Australian Electoral Division in the south-east of South Australia. The division was established on 2 October 1903, when South Australia's original single multi-member division was split into seven single-member divisions. It is named for Collet Barker, an early explorer of the region at the mouth of the Murray River. Nildottie, South Australia
Nildottie is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the east side of the Murray River about east of the state capital of Adelaide and about north-east of the municipal seat in Mannum. Nildottie's boundaries were created on 27 March 2003 for the "long established name" and include the sites of the Kroehns Landing Shack Site and Scrubby Flat Shack Site. On 22 December 2011, Nildottie was enlarged by the addition of land on its northern side after the locality of Greenways Landing was abolished following a request from residents and local government. The name is derived from the Aboriginal word 'ngurltartang', which means 'smoke signal hill'. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Nildottie had 189 people living within its boundaries. Copeville is a town and a locality in the Australian state of South Australia. It was established as a town on the Waikerie railway line, but the line has closed and the town has declined. The bulk grain silos are still at the railway station, but do not operate every grain season. There was once a Methodist church in Copeville. It joined the Karoonda circuit in 1966. Perponda is a town and locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about east of the state capital of Adelaide city centre, Adelaide. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Perponda had a population of 60 people. History Perponda was on the Waikerie railway line. Bowhill, South Australia
Bowhill is a locality in South Australia. A settlement is located inside a bend on the left (eastern/southern) bank of the Murray River between Mannum and Swan Reach. It is predominantly shacks built facing the river bank. The settlement is in the Mid Murray Council area, but most of the locality is located away from the river and within the District Council of Karoonda East Murray, including the Lowan Conservation Park. Bowhill is located in the local government area of District Council of Karoonda East Murray, the state electoral district of Hammond and the federal Division of Barker. The nearest crossings of the Murray River are the Mannum ferry downstream and the Purnong ferry by road upstream. Purnong or Purnong Landing is the location of a cable ferry across the Murray River upstream of Mannum. The town is on the cliffs above the left (eastern) bank of the river. It is by road from Mannum on the west side of the Murray, and on the east side. The town was surveyed in 1911 and named for an Aboriginal word meaning ''at the wide place''. The Murray Mallee is the grain-growing and sheep-farming area of South Australia bounded to the north and west by the Murray River (in South Australia, "River Murray"), to the east by the Victorian border, and extending about 50 km south of the Mallee Highway. The Murray Mallee area is predominantly a vast plain of low elevation, with sandhills and gentle undulating sandy rises, interspersed by flats. The annual rainfall ranges from approximately 250 mm in the north to 400 mm further south. The area was very lightly populated up until the beginning of the 20th century, with marginal pastoral runs of sheep at low stocking rates. Artesian water was discovered at moderate depth, and railways opened to make shipping of grain feasible. The first railway was the Pinnaroo line in 1906 from Tailem Bend on the main Melbourne–Adelaide railway.
