A civil township is a widely used unit of local government in the United States that is subordinate to a county, most often in the northern and midwestern parts of the country. The term town is used in New England, New York, and Wisconsin to refer to the equivalent of the civil township in these states; Minnesota uses "town" officially but often uses it and "township" interchangeably. Niles Charter Township is a charter township of Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 14,164 at the 2010 census. On June 5, 2006, the township board voted unanimously to approve a resolution for Niles Township to become Niles Charter Township. Bertrand Township is a civil township of Berrien County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the township population was 2,657. Bertrand Township was established in 1836, and named for Joseph Bertrand, a pioneer citizen. Communities Dayton is an unincorporated community in the western part of township at . It is on Dayton Lake off U.S. Highway 12 about midway between Niles and Three Oaks, just a few miles north of the Indiana state border. The settlement was founded in 1830 by Benjamin Redding, and a post office named "Redding's Mills" opened on June 17, 1850. It was designated on an 1839 map of Michigan as "Terré Coupe", and when the Michigan Central Railroad was built through the area in 1848, the depot was named Terre Coupe (and also spelled Terra Coupée). Milton Township, Cass County, Michigan
Milton Township is a civil township of Cass County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census, up from 2,646 at the 2000 census. Communities There are no incorporated municipalities in the township. * Dover was a former post office in the township that operated from May 28, 1836, until October 26, 1841. Peter Truitt, from Slatter Neck, Sussex County, Delaware, settled on near the center of the township in 1831. He operated a tavern on the old Chicago Road between Chicago and Detroit (now US 12), known as the "White Oak Tavern" because of an immense oak tree near the house.
