Claxton is a small village south-east of Norwich, and south of the River Yare, between Rockland St. Mary and Loddon in South Norfolk, England. In the 2001 census it contained 85 households and a population of 244, the population increasing to 291 at the 2011 census. Just to the south lie the small villages of Ashby St Mary and Carleton St Peter. The villages name origin is uncertain but possibly means 'Clacc's farm/settlement', 'Klakkr's farm/settlement' or perhaps, 'hill farm/settlement'. To the east of the village are the remains of Claxton Castle, which dates from the mid-14th century, licences to crenellate having been granted in 1340 and 1376. Situated on private land in the grounds of Claxton Manor House it comprises a massive brick-and-flint wall long with six bastions. Claxton is a village and part of the Claxton & Sand Hutton civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. It is near the A64 road and north-east of York. History The village is mentioned twice in the ''Domesday Book'' as ''Claxtorp'' in the ''Bulford hundred''. The manor was split between ''Ligulf'' and ''Arnger and Gospatric, son of Arnketil'' before the Norman invasion. Afterwards the parts of the manor were passed to the Crown and Count Robert of Mortain who made Nigel Fossard lord of the manor. The Crown gifted some of the manor to St Mary's Abbey until the dissolution when it was granted to Thomas Bamburgh of Foston. It was held by the family until 1857 when it became the property of the lord of Sand Hutton manor. The origin of the name of the village is uncertain. Claxton is a city in Evans County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census, up from 2,276 in 2000. It is the county seat of Evans County. History The town had its visionary, W.R. Hendricks. In May 1890 there were only a couple of dwellings scattered around the area that is Claxton. Hendricks, son of Glenn and Nancy Hendricks, had been given a large tract of land by his parents. The Hendricks's ambition was to secure a railroad station at the site, but they met considerable opposition from railroad company officials who maintained that existing stations in the area were sufficient to meet the needs. W.R. Hendricks made a proposition to railroad officials that a well be dug and pump installed free of charge so that trains could stop for water. The deal was made and actual construction began in the latter part of June 1890. Claxton is an unincorporated community in Anderson County in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The Claxton Shield was the name of the premier baseball competition in Australia held between state-based teams, as well as the name of the trophy awarded to the champion team. From the summer of 1989β90 until 2001β02, and again since 2010β11, the tournament was replaced by one of three other competitions: the original Australian Baseball League (ABL), the International Baseball League of Australia (IBLA), and since the 2010β11 season the new ABL. Despite other competitions being held in place of the Claxton Shield, the physical trophy has remained the award for the winning teams. Though city-based teams have competed for the Claxton Shield in some seasons, the name engraved on the shield is that of the winning state; for the 2010β11 ABL season won by the Perth Heat, "West Australia 2011" was engraved. The Claxton Bakery is a confectionery company based in Claxton, Georgia. History The Claxton Bakery was founded by Savino Gillio-Tos (March 31, 1885 in Ivrea, Italy - January 1966 in Claxton, Georgia) who immigrated to the United States in 1902. He moved to New York City, where he worked at a Brooklyn hotel as a master baker. He eventually took a job in Macon, Georgia and moved from there to Claxton. Mr. Gillio-Tos's Claxton Bakery was a successful maker of baked goods, homemade ice cream and fruitcakes. In 1945, Savino Gillio-Tos sold the bakery to Albert Parker, an employee, and retired. Albert Parker's Claxton Bakery Under Parker's leadership, the Claxton Bakery began to focus on fruitcakes; this eventually led the bakery to start selling fruitcakes for fundraising purposes in the 1950s. Claxton Castle
Claxton Castle in the village of Claxton, Norfolk, is a ruined brick castle some 13 km southeast of Norwich. Details Sir William de Kerdeston and his son were given licence to crenellate the castle in 1340 and 1376 respectively, the latter licence necessary due to Kerdeston's death before completion of the castle. It was largely demolished in the 17th century to build Claxton Hall. The castle ruins consist of a long wall and three towers with various staircases and archways. Earthworks indicate an outer moat and causeway dating from medieval times. It is a Grade II* listed building first listed in 1951 and is a scheduled monument.
