Claudette Buttigieg (née Pace, 8 February 1968) is a Maltese member of parliament, Deputy Speaker, and former TV presenter and singer. Personal life and Eurovision Song Contest Born in Naxxar, she won the Malta Song For Europe festival in January 2000, with the song ''Desire'' The song is her debut and only single. She toured Germany, Australia and Sweden, the host nation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 before the main event where her entry ''Desire'' finished in eighth place. The song was subsequently chosen as the official song for UK's 2001 gay pride. She was the only television presenter that worked with the main three Maltese television networks, being One TV, NET TV and TVM. She was acquitted from continuing her career as presenter on National TV (TVM) due to her entering politics. For the Eurovision Song Contest 1999, Malta entered "Believe 'n peace", performed by Times Three. Before Eurovision Malta Song for Europe 1999 The final was held on 19 and 20 February 1999 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, hosted by Mariella Scerri and Joseph Chetcuti. 16 songs competed, and the winner was decided by an "expert" jury – one of whom was Mojca Mavec, the presenter of the Slovene national selection for 1999. Georgina and Paul Giordimaina represented Malta in 1991, and Georgina was also a backing singer in 1996. Claudette Pace would go on to represent the country in 2000. Fabrizio Faniello would follow suit in both 2001 and 2006, and Olivia Lewis would do the same in 2007. At Eurovision The song received 32 points, finishing 15th. Malta competed in the Eurovision Song Contest 2001, held on 12 May 2001 at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Maltese entry was selected through the Malta Song for Europe contest, where the winner was Fabrizio Faniello with the song "Another Summer Night". Malta performed 21st out of the 23 countries competing in the contest and placed ninth with 48 points. Background Prior to the 2001 contest, Malta had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 13 times since its first entry in 1971. Malta briefly competed in the Eurovision Song Contest in the 1970s before withdrawing for 16 years. The country had, to this point, competed in every contest since returning in 1991.
