Clarrie Nolan
Clarence Joseph Nolan (24 August 1904 – 18 January 1998) was an Australian rules footballer who played with North Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Nolan, was a Benalla and Shepparton recruit, who joined North Melbourne in 1925 and took part in their inaugural VFL season. He was North Melbourne's leading goal-kicker in 1928 with 24 goals, despite not registering his first goal until round nine. In 1928, Nolan won the ''Sporting Globe'' newspaper competition for the longest place kick, with a kick of 71 yards, 2 foot & 4 inches. In 1929, Nolan joined West Albury as captain-coach and kicked seven goals in their Ovens and Murray Football League grand final win against East Albury Football Club. In June 1930, Nolan stepped aside as captain / coach of West Albury to allow Haydn Bunton to take over as captain / coach on his return to West Albury from Fitzroy Football Club. Wangaratta
Wangaratta ( ) is a city in the northeast of Victoria, Australia, from Melbourne along the Hume Highway. The city had an estimated urban population of 19,318 at June 2018. Wangaratta has recorded a population growth rate of almost 1% annually from 2016 to 2018 which is the second highest of all cities in North-Eastern Victoria. The city is located at the junction of the Ovens and King rivers, which drain the northwestern slopes of the Victorian Alps. Leo Nolan (footballer)
Leo Nolan (9 February 1910 – 11 February 1993) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL), who was originally from the Wangaratta Football Club, but played with Maryborough in 1931. Educated at the Wangaratta High School, he early developed an liking for football. He originally played with Wangaratta then played in a Railway competition on the Heidelberg line for one season, and showed promise. Then he shifted to the Chiltern & District Football Association and had one season with Wodonga. His railway employment necessitated his being at Mildura for two seasons, and he played there. He then had one Ballarat Football League premiership season at Maryborough in 1931 and was then transferred to Melbourne in 1932. Cleared to Wangaratta in early 1933, he kicked 85 goals in an Ovens and Murray Football League premiership season. Leeton is a town located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. ''The Corowa Free Press'' was a weekly English language newspaper published in Corowa, New South Wales, Australia, between 1875 and 1928. History ''The Corowa Free Press'' was first launched by James Crauford Leslie and John William Hutchinson Wyse on 8 October 1875. James Crauford Leslie (1848-1907) was born in Scotland and emigrated to Melbourne, Australia with his family in 1854. In 1874 after being decorated for his involvement in the Maori Wars, he moved to Wahgunyah, Victoria to manage ''The Chronicle'' which served the cross-border towns of Wahgunyah and Corowa in New South Wales. Thomas Collins (Australian Politician)
Thomas Joseph Collins (6 April 1884 – 15 April 1945) was an Australian politician and businessman. He was a member of the Country Party and served in the House of Representatives from 1931 to 1943. He briefly served as Postmaster-General of Australia in 1941. Early life Collins was born at Yass, New South Wales to storekeeper John Collins and Mary, née Hartigan. In 1902, having attended the local Catholic school, he enlisted in the 5th Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse, to fight in the Boer War. However, by the time Collins's unit arrived, the war had finished. Collins moved to Young in 1906, where in 1911 he began his own business, which prospered. The 1940 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 21 September 1940. All 74 seats in the House of Representatives and 19 of the 36 seats in the Senate were up for election. The incumbent Coalition, consisting of the United Australia Party led by Prime Minister Robert Menzies and the Country Party led by Archie Cameron, defeated the opposition Labor Party under John Curtin despite losing the overall popular vote.
