Clarke Abel
Clarke Abel (5 September 1780 – 24 November 1826) was a British surgeon and naturalist. He accompanied Lord Amherst on his mission to China in 1816-17 as the embassy's chief medical officer and naturalist, on the recommendation of Sir Joseph Banks. The mission was Britain's second unsuccessful attempt to establish diplomatic relations with China and involved travelling to the Beijing and the famous botanical gardens of Fa Tee (Huadi) near Canton (Fangcun District). While in China, Abel collected specimens and seeds of the plant that carries his name, '' Abelia chinensis'', described by Banks' botanical secretary Robert Brown, "with friendly partiality". However a shipwreck and an attack by pirates on the way back to his home in Britain caused him to lose all of his specimens. Abel's ''Narrative of a Journey in the Interior of China'', 1818, gives a detailed account of the collection's misfortunes. Clarke James Carlisle (born 14 October 1979) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender and was chairman of the Professional Footballers' Association. Born in Preston, he began playing football at a young age, taking inspiration from his father who played semi-professionally. Carlisle represented his home county of Lancashire at youth level. The start of his professional career was his Football League debut for Blackpool in September 1997. He moved to Queens Park Rangers in May 2000. In the same year, Carlisle won three caps for the England under-21 national team. Clarke Dermody (born 22 April 1980, in Invercargill) is a former New Zealand rugby union player who has gone on to coach professionally. Dermody was born in Invercargill, New Zealand, and attended Southland Boys' High School. Dermody's great great grandfather Graham Shannon played for New Zealand in 1893. Playing career Dermody played as a prop. He represented Woodlands in the Invercargill premier competition and was the second Woodlands player to have played for the All Blacks after Jimmy Cowan (All Black number 1046). They were later joined by Jamie Mackintosh (All Black 1081). Frank Clarke Fraser (29 March 1920 – 17 December 2014) was a Canadian medical geneticist. William Clarke Hinkle (April 10, 1909 – November 9, 1988) was an American football player. He played on offense as a fullback, defense as a linebacker, and special teams as a kicker and punter. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of its second class of inductees in 1964. Known as one of the toughest players in the era of iron man football, Hinkle played for the Green Bay Packers from 1932 to 1941 and held the all-time National Football League (NFL) records for rushing yardage and carries when his playing career ended. He led the NFL in touchdowns (seven) in 1937, in points scored (58) in 1938, and in field goals made and field goal percentage in both 1940 and 1941. Clarke Howard Johnson (November 18, 1851 – September 14, 1930) was a judge and state legislator in Rhode Island. He served as an associate justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court from 1903 to 1913 and chief justice from 1913 to 1917. He resigned upon reaching the age of 65, as required by state law. His parents were Elisha and Matilda (Howard) Johnson. He was born in Foster, Rhode Island and educated in its district schools as well as Lapham Institute in North Scituate. He graduated from Brown University in 1877 and was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar in 1879. He married, Ida S. Harrington December 21, 1889. He served as a Representative in the General Assembly from 1879 to 1902 and as clerk of the House of Representatives from 1881 to 1886. Clarke Lewis (November 8, 1840 – March 13, 1896) was an American educator, Civil War veteran, and politician who served two terms as a United States representative from Mississippi from 1889 to 1893. Biography He was born in Huntsville, Alabama. He moved with his mother to Noxubee County, Mississippi in 1844 where he attended the district schools and Somerville Institute and also engaged in teaching for several years. Lewis entered the Confederate Army in February 1861 and served until the close of the American Civil War. After the war, he resumed teaching in 1865. He was also employed as a clerk in a store in 1866 and 1867 and engaged in mercantile and agricultural pursuits 1867–1879. MacArthur played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres, Atlanta Thrashers and Toronto Maple Leafs.
