Cambria Productions
Cambria Productions was the West Hollywood, California animation production studio most famous for its wide usage of the Syncro-Vox technique of animation developed by Edwin Gillette, who was a co-partner in the studio. Owned by Clark S. Haas, Jr. from 1957 until 1965, the studio produced ''Clutch Cargo'' (1959-1960), ''Space Angel'' (1962), '' Captain Fathom'' (1965), and ''The New 3 Stooges'' (1965-1966). A test film for another series, '' Doc Potts'' or ''Doc Potts and Weselly'', was prepared in 1960, though the series was apparently never produced. Two sample episodes of a proposed Moon Mullins series were produced along with a sales film to promote it to local television stations, but it didn't clear enough markets to go into production. ''Speed Buggy'' is an American animated television series, produced by Hanna-Barbera, which originally aired for one season on CBS from September 8, 1973, to December 22, 1973. With the voices of Mel Blanc, Michael Bell, Arlene Golonka, and Phil Luther Jr., the show follows an orange anthropomorphic dune buggy who alongside teenagers Debbie, Mark, and Tinker, solves mysteries while participating in racing competitions around the world. Edwin Gillette
Edwin Gillette (August 11, 1909 in Chicago – September 30, 2003 in Los Angeles) was a cameraman and inventor notable for the development of the Syncro-Vox technique of limited animation, which was used in the series ''Clutch Cargo''. Early life Born to a Chicago architect, Gillette grew up in Pasadena, California, graduated in 1929 from the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, and studied engineering at Stanford University. His interest in film led to his first job in the entertainment field at Paramount Studios, where he was Preston Sturges' secretary. After producing training films as an officer with the Army Air Corps in World War II, he returned to take a degree in cinema at USC. Career Gillette developed the Syncro-Vox technique of animation which was first used in "talking animal" commercials of the early 1950s. Limited Animation
Limited animation is a process in the overall technique of traditional animation that reuses frames of character animation. Early history The use of budget-cutting and time-saving animation measures in animation dates back to the earliest commercial animation, including cycled animations, mirror-image and symmetrical drawings, still characters, and other labor-saving methods. In general, the progression was from early productions in which every frame was drawn by hand, independent of each other drawing, toward more limited animation that made use of the same drawings in different ways. Winsor McCay, a man who put an unprecedented amount of detail into his animations, boasted that in his 1914 film, ''Gertie the Dinosaur'', everything moved, including the rocks and blades of grass in the background.
