Clark County Court House (Kentucky)
The Clark County Court House is a Greek Revival courthouse in downtown Winchester, Kentucky, United States. Built in 1853, it is the fourth building on this site, and still houses the Circuit Courtroom and Family Courtroom for the Administrative Office of the Courts. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is the centerpiece of the Winchester Downtown Commercial District, also NRHP-listed. Winchester, Kentucky
Winchester is a home rule-class city in and the county seat of Clark County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 18,368 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winchester is located roughly halfway between Louisville and Ashland. History It was named after Winchester, Virginia. Geography Winchester is located northwest of the center of Clark County, east of Lexington and west of Mt. Sterling. Kentucky Route 1958 (Bypass Road) is an outer loop around the town. Kentucky Route 627 (Boonesborough Road) leads towards Richmond, to the south and Paris to the north. U.S. Route 60 (Winchester-Lexington Road/Lexington Avenue) runs through downtown Winchester. John McMurtry (architect)
John McMurtry (September 13, 1812 – March 3, 1890) was a 19th-century American builder and architect who worked in Lexington, Kentucky designing a number of notable buildings, several of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. According to Clay Lancaster, McMurtry is the "man whose work is most representative of the nineteenth century architecture of central Kentucky", and among his works are some "meriting careful consideration". McMurtry "produced" (as architect and/or builder) more than 200 buildings in the Bluegrass area of Kentucky, and is credited for the popularity of Gothic Revival architecture in the Bluegrass area, as exemplified by Loudoun House (built by McMurtry; designed by nationally renowned architect Alexander Jackson Davis. Greek Revival Architecture
The Greek Revival was an architectural movement which began in the middle of the 18th century but which particularly flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in northern Europe and the United States and Canada, but also in Greece itself following independence in 1832. It revived many aspects of the forms and styles of ancient Greek architecture, in particular the Greek temple, with varying degrees of thoroughness and consistency. A product of Hellenism, it may be looked upon as the last phase in the development of Neoclassical architecture, which had for long mainly drawn from Roman architecture. Kerr Building
The S. P. Kerr Building is a historic building on the northwest corner of North Main Street and West Broadway in Winchester, Kentucky. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property in the Winchester Downtown Commercial District. Built in 1889, it is a three-story brick building with stone sills and lintels and a rounded corner entrance flanked by rough-hewn stone columns. The building contains about of space. The Kerr Building originally housed Eclipse Mills, but in later years it was home to J. J. Newberry's and The Corner Drug Store. By 1999, the building was vacant and in disrepair. As a result of the deterioration, the Bluegrass Trust for Historic Preservation placed the Kerr Building on its "11th Hour" Most Endangered list.
