Clarence L. Gunter
Clarence L. Gunter (June 22, 1908 – February 23, 1990) was an American businessman, educator, and politician. Gunter was born in Clara City, Chippewa County, Minnesota. He went to St. Mary's Boarding High School in Bird Island, Minnesota and then received his bachelor's degree from St. Cloud State University in 1971. He taught school and was a grain, fertilizer, seed and feed owner and the operator of the Gunter Elevator Company. Gunter lived in Raymond, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota with his wife and family. Clara City is a city in Chippewa County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,360 at the 2010 census. History Clara City developed as a railroad station for the Willmar & Sioux Falls Railway. Clara City was founded in 1887. It is named after Clara Koch, the wife of one of the town founders. The city was incorporated in September 1891. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. Minnesota State Highways 7 and 23 are two of the main routes in the city. Churches Clara City has five churches. Chippewa County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,598. Its county seat is Montevideo. The county was formed in 1862, and was organized in 1868. History Chippewa County was organized on March 5, 1868, after having been part of Renville County. The northern boundary change separating it from Swift County led to reorganization on February 18, 1870. The first three county commissioners, appointed by the governor, were Daniel S. Wilkins, Ole Thorson and M. Davidson. The county commissioners first met at Wilkins's cabin on January 9, 1869. Wilkins was appointed chairman of the board. Raymond is a city in southwest Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 764 at the 2010 census. Raymond High School consolidated with Clara City and Maynard High Schools in the late 1980s to create the MACCRAY (Maynard-Clara City-Raymond Independent School District). History Raymond was platted in 1887, and named for Raymond Spicer, the son of a first settler. A post office has been in operation at Raymond since 1889. On March 30, 2023, an early morning BNSF freight train carrying 40 cars including 14 cars hauling ethanol, derailed near downtown Raymond. Kandiyohi County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, its population is 43,732. As of November 20, 1871, its county seat is Willmar. Kandiyohi County comprises the US Census Bureau's "Willmar, MN Micropolitan Statistical Area". History Kandiyohi County is named for a Dakota word meaning "where the buffalo fish come". (''kandi’'' - the buffalo fish + ''oh-hi’-yu'' - v. of ''hiyu'' - to come through). It was organized on March 20, 1858, with Kandiyohi established as the county seat in 1870 (it was then called Kandiyohi Station, as it was merely a stop on the railroad line).
