Clare Marx
Dame Clare Lucy Marx (15 March 1954 – 27 November 2022) was a British surgeon who was president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England from July 2014 to July 2017, the first woman to hold the position, and former chair of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. From January 2019 through July 2021, Dame Clare was chair of the General Medical Council, the first woman to hold this role. She had worked as an orthopaedic surgeon at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust from 1993. Personal life Marx was born in Coventry on 15 March 1954. She was the daughter of a teacher and an industrial chemist and grew up in Warwick and then Cheltenham. She decided to become a doctor after a work experience placement at Coventry Hospital. In her spare time, Marx enjoyed gardening and walking in Scotland and the Alps. She also enjoyed opera. Marx was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2021. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. Professor Sir Norman Stanley Williams (born 15 March 1947) is a British surgeon and former President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (2011–14). History Born in Leeds, he was educated at Roundhay School, Leeds, and at the London Hospital Medical College (University of London). He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as a Fulbright scholar in 1980. Professional career In 1982, he was appointed Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant Surgeon at the University of Leeds and the Leeds General Infirmary.
