Clare Downtown Historic District
The Clare Downtown Historic District is a collection of 51 buildings located along four blocks of North McEwan Street in Clare, Michigan, along with adjacent portions of East and West Fourth Street and East and West Fifth Street. Street addresses of the structures run from 307 to 622 North McEwan, 114-120 East Fifth Street, 102-202 West Fifth Street, 112-115 East Fourth Street, and 112-124 West Fourth Street. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. History In 1864, Bay City lumberman William McEwan purchased the acreage around the area that is now downtown Clare. In 1868, he established a logging camp just south of what is now the city, and began clearing timber. Clare, Michigan
Clare is a city mostly in Clare County in the U.S. State of Michigan. A small portion of the city extends south into Isabella County. The population was 3,254 at the 2020 census. Clare was settled as early as 1870 and contains two listings on the National Register of Historic Places: the Clare Downtown Historic District and the Clare Congregational Church. The city is located along the junction of U.S. Route 10 and U.S. Route 127, and each highway has a business route ( Bus. 10 and Bus. US 127) through the downtown area. M-115 also runs through the city. History Clare was founded with the coming of the Pere Marquette railroad in 1870. It was named after the county, which was named after County Clare in Ireland. Chicago's architecture is famous throughout the world and one style is referred to as the Chicago School. Much of its early work is also known as Commercial Style. Flint And Pere Marquette Railroad
The Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad (F&PM) is a defunct railroad which operated in the U.S. state of Michigan between 1857 and 1899. It was one of the three companies which merged to become the Pere Marquette Railway. Early history The F&PM was chartered on January 22, 1857 as the Flint and Pere Marquette Railway for the purpose of constructing an east-west railway line on a route, for which a federal land grant was offered, from Flint, Michigan to Lake Michigan at Pere Marquette (now Ludington, Michigan). The early promoters of the road were George M. Dewey and E.H. Hazelton of Flint, with Dewey serving as the first president of the F&PM. Construction started in 1859 in East Saginaw. A more energetic management took charge in 1860 when Captain Eber Brock Ward of Detroit, a prominent lumberman, vessel owner, and steel manufacturer, was elected to the presidency of the F&PM. Clare Congregational Church
The Clare Congregational Church, also known as the Clare Congregational United Church of Christ, is a church located at 110 West Fifth Street in Clare, Michigan. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. History The village of Clare was established in 1870−71. The Rev. Austin H. Norris arrived in 1872, and organized the Clare Congregational Church. The congregation first met in a school house, but in 1873 work was begun on a small frame church, which was completed in 1874. In 1907, the congregation determined that a new church building was required. The original church was moved to the rear of the lot, and in 1908 the church commissioned Saginaw architect William T. Cooper to design the new building. Construction was completed in 1909.
