Clara Grima
Clara Isabel Grima Ruiz (born 1971) is a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Seville, specializing in computational geometry. She is known for her research on scutoids (polyhedron-like shapes that can pack the space between pairs of curved surfaces) and for her popularization of mathematics. Education and career Grima was born in 1971 in Coria del Río. She completed her doctorate in mathematics from the University of Seville in 1998, and is a professor of applied mathematics at the same university. Grima also serves as president for the committee on popularization of the Royal Spanish Mathematical Society. Computational Geometry
Computational geometry is a branch of computer science devoted to the study of algorithms which can be stated in terms of geometry. Some purely geometrical problems arise out of the study of computational geometric algorithms, and such problems are also considered to be part of computational geometry. Scutoid
A scutoid is a particular type of geometric solid between two parallel surfaces. The boundary of each of the surfaces (and of all the other parallel surfaces between them) either is a polygon or resembles a polygon, but is not necessarily planar, and the vertices of the two end polygons are joined by either a curve or a Y-shaped connection on at least one of the edges, but not necessarily all of the edges. Scutoids present at least one vertex between these two planes. Scutoids are not necessarily convex, and lateral faces are not necessarily planar, so several scutoids can pack together to fill all the space between the two parallel surfaces. They may be more generally described as a mix between a frustum and a prismatoid. Coria Del Río
Coria del Río is a small town near Seville, on the shores of Guadalquivir river. History Early in the 17th Century, ''daimyō'' Date Masamune of Sendai sent a delegation led by Hasekura Tsunenaga (1571–1622) to Europe. In 1613, Hasekura and the delegates visited the Spanish court of King Philip III and the Vatican. An embassy was established and six samurai stayed in Spain. Approximately 650 of Coria's 24,000 residents, as reported in 2003, use the surname ''Japón'' (originally ''Hasekura de Japón''), identifying them as the descendants of the first Japanese official envoy to Spain. The name first appeared on an official document in 1646. Some babies born within the town are known to display the mongolian spot which is common in Asians.
