Clara D. Bloomfield
Clara Derber Bloomfield (May 15, 1942 – March 1, 2020), was an American physician and cancer researcher. Her work focused on the genetic changes that are present in certain types of blood cancers, and how those can be utilized to improve treatment for the affected patients. Education Clara D. Bloomfield graduated from University Laboratory High School in 1959, earned her B.A. from the San Diego State College (San Diego, California) in 1963, and earned her M.D. from the University of Chicago in 1968. She completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago and a fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Minnesota. Career Bloomfield was the first woman to reach the rank of a full professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota in 1980. Flushing is a neighborhood in the north-central portion of the New York City borough of Queens. The neighborhood is the fourth-largest central business district in New York City. Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells, characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal cells that build up in the bone marrow and blood and interfere with normal blood cell production. Symptoms may include feeling tired, shortness of breath, easy bruising and bleeding, and increased risk of infection. Occasionally, spread may occur to the brain, skin, or gums. As an acute leukemia, AML progresses rapidly, and is typically fatal within weeks or months if left untreated. Risk factors include smoking, previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy, myelodysplastic syndrome, and exposure to the chemical benzene. The underlying mechanism involves replacement of normal bone marrow with leukemia cells, which results in a drop in red blood cells, platelets, and normal white blood cells.
