Clandown F.C.
Clandown F.C. was a non-league football club that played in the village of Clandown, near Radstock in Somerset. Clandown played in the Western Football League, Wiltshire Premier League and the Somerset Senior League until 2003–04. They played for most of their existence at Thynne Field, which is now in poor condition as the clubhouse was blown down by a severe storm in the early 1990s. In 1999 the club moved to Greyfield Sports and Social Club in nearby Paulton. Clandown joined Division 2 of the Western League in 1920–21, but although they won the division the following season, they left the league. They rejoined immediately after the Second World War and remained in the league until 1959–60. They were Division 2 champions in 1946–47 and were promoted to Division 1, but little success followed. Clandown
Clandown is a village lying north of Radstock in Somerset, England, just off the Fosseway. It is north of Radstock. The nearby Bowlditch Quarry is a 0.25 hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. History Clandown was formerly a mining village, on the Somerset Coalfield, but the last pits in the area closed in the late 1960s. The colliery at Clandown opened in 1811 and closed in 1929 and had a maximum shaft depth of . In 1896 it was owned by the trustees of the late C. Hollewy and by 1908 by the Clandown Colliery Co. Artefacts from a Roman site have been found close to the village. Clandown Farmhouse on Pow's Hill was built in the 1720s. As well as a church, there were two chapels and three public houses. One of the chapels has been demolished and the other has been converted to apartments. Two pubs have been demolished. Radstock
Radstock is a town and civil parish on the northern slope of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, England, about south-west of Bath and north-west of Frome. It is within the area of the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset. The Radstock built-up area had a population of 9,419 at the 2011 Census. Radstock has been settled since the Iron Age, and its importance grew after the construction of the Fosse Way, a Roman road. The town grew after 1763, when coal was discovered in the area. Large numbers of mines opened during the 19th century, including several owned by the Waldegrave family, who had been Lords of the Manor since the Civil War. Admiral Lord Radstock, brother of George, fourth Earl Waldegrave, took the town's name as his title when created a Baron. Western Football League
The Western Football League is a football league in South West England, covering Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, western Dorset, parts of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. The league's current main sponsor is Toolstation, so it is also known as the Toolstation League. The Wiltshire Football League is a football league in England, formed by amalgamation in 1976. All clubs are affiliated to a County Football Association. The area covered by the competition is the county of Wiltshire and 15 miles beyond the county boundary. The Somerset County League is a football competition based in England. The Premier Division sits at step 7 (or level 11) of the National League System. It is a feeder to the Western League Division One and has promoted a club in seven of the last ten seasons – Hengrove Athletic, Portishead, Radstock Town, Oldland Abbotonians, Wells City, Cheddar, Ashton & Backwell United and Nailsea & Tickenham. Paulton
Paulton () is a large village and civil parish, with a population of 5,302, located to the north of the Mendip Hills, very close to Norton Radstock in the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset (BANES), England. Paulton is a former coal mining village and the terminus of the Somerset Coal Canal is at Paulton basin, just north of the village. Paulton was home to the now-closed Polestar Purnells printing factory and Ashman's boot factory, where 'Voidax' safety footwear was manufactured, and in particular Motorcycle speedway boots. The Somerset County Football Association, also known as the Somerset FA, is the governing body of football in the county of Somerset. The association was formed in 1885. History The Somerset County Football Association was formed in 1885. There was a very small number of clubs at that time and no mandatory requirement to be affiliated. It is very different from today where there are in excess of 800 clubs which equates to probably more than 2,000 teams. The first Secretary was a Mr H J Ker Thompson of Burnham-on-Sea who resigned in 1896. At the time there was no appointed Chairman, one would be co-opted on the night of Council Meetings.
