Claire Smith (archaeologist)
Claire Smith , (born 15 July 1957) is an Australian Archaeology, archaeologist specialising in Indigenous archaeology, symbolic communication and rock art. She served as Dean (research), Dean (Research) of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Flinders University in 2017-2018 and, prior to that, as head of the Department of Archaeology. She served two terms as president of the World Archaeological Congress from 2003 to 2014 and greatly increased the organization's size and visibility. Among her many publications is the ''Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology'' (Springer 2014, 2020). Education and career Smith obtained a bachelor's degree in archaeology from the University of New England (Australia), University of New England in 1990, and a PhD from the same university in 1996. Claire Smith (born c. 1954) is an American sportswriter, who covered Major League Baseball for the '' Hartford Courant'', ''The New York Times'', and ''The Philadelphia Inquirer''. She is currently a news editor for ESPN. Smith was the first woman to be honored with the J. G. Taylor Spink Award by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Biography Smith was born in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Neshaminy High School. Her mother, Bernice, was a chemist who worked for General Electric. Claire Bidwell Smith (born May 21, 1978) is an American therapist and author who specializes in grief. She is known for her memoir, ''The Rules of Inheritance'', as well as her books ''After This: When Life is Over, Where Do We Go?'' and ''Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief''. Smith draws on the personal loss of both of her parents and on her profession as a grief counselor to help others navigate grief and healing. Early life and education Claire Bidwell Smith's parents were diagnosed with cancer within months of each other when she was fourteen. Her mother died when she was eighteen and her father when she was twenty-five. Smith speaks often about how the experiences of their illnesses and subsequent deaths inform the work she does today.
