Clair Alan Brown
Clair Alan Brown (August 16, 1903 - March 24, 1982) was an American botanist who specialized in Louisiana flora. He was a Louisiana State University faculty member from 1926 until his retirement in 1970. Biography Brown was born in Port Allegany, Pennsylvania to Charles Melvin and Jennie Burroughs Brown, one of four sons. He earned his bachelor's degree ''cum laude'' from New York State College of Forestry in 1925 and his Master's in botany from the University of Michigan in 1926. He began working at Louisiana State University (LSU) the following year before returning to the University of Michigan for his doctorate, which he completed in 1934. His dissertation was titled ''Morphology and biology of some species of Odontia''. He took up his position at LSU again and taught botany, systematic botany, wood identification, dendrology, forest pathology, ecology, and palynology until his retirement in 1970. Port Allegany, Pennsylvania
Port Allegany is a borough in McKean County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,116 at the 2020 census. The town's tree-lined streets lie in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, 30 miles west of the Allegheny River's headwaters. History Originally known as Canoe Place, the town's name was changed to Port Allegany in 1838. It is unusual among places in Pennsylvania that make reference to the Allegheny River; it used the spelling "Allegany," more commonly encountered in place names in neighboring New York. The town developed as a port on the Allegheny River, and provided a place where travelers coming overland from the Susquehanna River could continue by boat. Palynology
Palynology is the "study of dust" (from grc-gre, παλύνω, palynō, "strew, sprinkle" and '' -logy'') or of "particles that are strewn". A classic palynologist analyses particulate samples collected from the air, from water, or from deposits including sediments of any age. The condition and identification of those particles, organic and inorganic, give the palynologist clues to the life, environment, and energetic conditions that produced them. The term is commonly used to refer to a subset of the discipline, which is defined as "the study of microscopic objects of macromolecular organic composition (i.e., compounds of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen), not capable of dissolution in hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acids".
