Claflin Family
The Claflin family are a Scottish American family of 17th century New England origins. The descendants of Robert Maclachlan of Wenham, Massachusetts, a Scottish soldier and prisoner of war from the Battle of Dunbar (1650) assumed to have belonged to the Clan Maclachlan, and his wife Joanna Warner, members of the family have distinguished themselves in various occupations and regions of the United States. Revolutionary War Although not of great means in the early generations, a considerable number of the Claflin family, twenty four in all, fought as militiamen and soldiers on the American side in the American Revolutionary War, including at Lexington and Concord (many), the Battle of Bunker Hill (several), the Battle of White Plains (one), and finally in the Saratoga campaign (two, possibly more), with Nathaniel Claflin being present at the Surrender of Burgoyne. Mamie Claflin
Mamie Claflin ( Perkins; March 8, 1867 – December 1, 1929) was an American temperance and woman suffrage leader. In addition to serving six years as president of the Nebraska Woman's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U.) (1912–18), for 16 years, she was also the editor and publisher of its organ, ''The Union Worker'' (1898-1912; 1927-29). Early life and education Mamie Mildred Perkins was born at Burlington, Kentucky, March 8, 1867. Her parents were Richard C. Perkins (b. 1842) and Jeannette (Blythe) Perkins (b. 1845). The father, a veteran of the Civil War, became a homesteader in Hall County, Nebraska. Mamie had four younger siblings: Edith, Jeanetta, R. Clark, and Emanuel. She was educated in the public schools of Kentucky and of Hall County, Nebraska, arriving in Nebraska with her family in 1874. She graduated from the high school at Grand Island, Nebraska. Lady Tennessee Celeste Claflin, Viscountess of Montserrat (October 26, 1844 – January 18, 1923), also known as Tennie C., was an American suffragist best known as the first woman, along with her sister Victoria Woodhull, to open a Wall Street brokerage firm, which occurred in 1870. Early life and education Tennessee Claflin's exact birth date is unclear, but she is generally reported to have been born between 1843 and 1846. Biographer Myrna MacPherson cites Claflin's date of birth as October 26, 1845, while journalist Barbara Goldsmith cites a birth year of 1846. It is clear however, that Tennessee Claflin was the last of ten children born to Roxanna Hummel Claflin and Reuben Buckman Claflin in Homer, Licking County, Ohio. Their sister, Utica Claflin Brooker, was born between 1841 and 1843. Victoria Woodhull
Victoria Claflin Woodhull, later Victoria Woodhull Martin (September 23, 1838 – June 9, 1927), was an American leader of the women's suffrage movement who ran for President of the United States in the 1872 election. While many historians and authors agree that Woodhull was the first woman to run for the presidency, some disagree with classifying it as a true candidacy because she was younger than the constitutionally mandated age of 35. (Woodhull's 35th birthday was in September 1873, six months after the March inauguration.) However, election coverage by contemporary newspapers does not suggest age was a significant issue; this may, however, be due to the fact that few took the candidacy seriously. Claflin, Kansas
Claflin is a city in Barton County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 562. History Prior to American expansion and occupation, the region was controlled by Cheyenne, Pawnee, and Kiowa tribes. The Santa Fe Trail contributed to American settlement in Barton County, as it did throughout Kansas and much of the southern Great Plains. The first settlement claim recorded in the area of Claflin was made by George Platt in 1870. This claim was divided and re-entered, eventually being sold to J. H. Williamson in 1875, and becoming the town of Claflin. The community was officially organized in response to Missouri Pacific Railroad plans for a branch line to come through the area. Tracks were laid by 1887. The station, on the south side of the tracks, was originally named Giles City after landowner Stelle Giles.
