Civil Aviation Department (Hong Kong)
The Civil Aviation Department (CAD) is the civil aviation authority of Hong Kong, headquartered at Hong Kong International Airport. The department is responsible for providing air traffic control services to all aircraft operating within the Hong Kong Flight Information Region. It reports to the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the Hong Kong Government. The current Director-General of Civil Aviation is Victor Liu Chi-yung. The CAD was also responsible for managing the former Hong Kong International Airport at Kai Tak, until it was retired and replaced by the new Hong Kong International Airport managed by the Airport Authority. During British rule, CAD was not a sub-unit of the British Civil Aviation Authority. Since 1997, CAD maintains independent from the Civil Aviation Administration of China. The Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA; ) is responsible for investigating civil aviation accidents in Hong Kong, as well as those in other territories involving a Hong Kong-registered aircraft. It was established in 2018 under the Transport and Housing Bureau, currently the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the Government of Hong Kong. China Airlines Flight 642
China Airlines Flight 642 was a flight that crashed at Hong Kong (Chep Lap Kok) International Airport on 22 August 1999. It was operating from Bangkok (Bangkok International Airport, now renamed Don Mueang International Airport) to Taipei with a stopover in Hong Kong. The plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 (registration , was still carrying Mandarin Airlines' livery from its time of service with the carrier. While landing during a typhoon, it touched down hard, flipped over and caught fire. Of the 315 people on board, 312 survived and three were killed. It was the first fatal accident to occur at the new Hong Kong International airport since it opened in July 1998. Flight 642 was one of only three hull losses of MD-11s with passenger configuration, one other being Swissair Flight 111, which crashed in 1998 with 229 fatalities. CAAC Flight 301, a Hawker Siddeley Trident operated by CAAC Guangzhou Regional Administration (now China Southern Airlines) from Guangzhou Baiyun to Hong Kong Kai Tak, ran off the runway in Hong Kong on 31 August 1988 after clipping approach lights. The Civil Aviation Authority (, pt, Autoridade de Aviação Civil, AACM) is the civil aviation authority in the special administrative region of Macau, China and is responsible for controlling and regulating air its traffic and airspace. Its head office is on the 18th floor of the Cheng Feng Commercial Centre in Sé. The AACM is an agency under the Secretariat for Transport and Public Works. Chek Lap Kok is an island in the western waters of Hong Kong's New Territories. Unlike the smaller Lam Chau, it was only partially leveled when it was assimilated via land reclamation into the island for the current Hong Kong International Airport, which opened for commercial aviation in 1998.
