City Of Busselton
The City of Busselton is a local government area in the South West region of Western Australia, approximately south of Perth, the state capital. The city covers an area of and had a population of 40,640 as at the 2021 Census. It contains two large towns, Busselton and Dunsborough, and a number of smaller towns. The city office is located on Southern Drive, Busselton. History The City of Busselton was established as the Busselton Road District on 11 May 1951 with the amalgamation of the Municipality of Busselton, governing the area of Busselton bounded by West Street and Ford Road, and the Sussex Road District, governing the remaining area. Both bodies had been established in 1871. The road district was declared a shire and became the Shire of Busselton with effect from 1 July 1961 following the passage of the ''Local Government Act 1960'', which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Abbey is a suburb of the Western Australian city of Busselton. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 1,321. This suburb, which was the western part of an area known as Abbeyville, was part of Broadwater when it was gazetted in 1897. Eagle Bay, Western Australia
Eagle Bay is a small town in Western Australia's South West region near Dunsborough, in the local government area of the City of Busselton. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 120. It is known for its luxury holiday homes, with an occupancy rate on the night of the 2021 census of about 13%. On 30 May 1801, a landing party from the Baudin expedition unsuccessfully looked for water at Eagle Bay; this event is commemorated by the Baudin memorial, which was unveiled in 2001. In the late 19th century Stewart Keenan, who had a farm in the local area, built a track connecting his Eagle Bay farm to the timber mill community at Yelverton. In the 1950s, there was a commercial salmon fishery in Eagle Bay. The modern-day settlement began to develop in the early 1970s. Yalyalup, Western Australia
Yalyalup is a suburb of the Western Australian city of Busselton. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 2,950. The word "Yalyalup" means "place of many holes" in the local Noongar dialect, being a reduplication of "yal", the Wardandi word for "large hole", plus the -up suffix, meaning "place of". After European settlement the area began to be used for timber-milling; the local mill was reworked using state-of-the-art technology in 1963 and finally closed in 1979. The area has also been used for farming, with the Mullgarnup Aboriginal Mission operating on a farm site for about ten years from 1887, and a state school being open from 1910 to 1921. The townsite of Wonnerup is located south of Perth and east of Busselton, Western Australia, Busselton. It was gazetted a townsite in 1856, deriving its name from the nearby Vasse-Wonnerup Estuary, Wonnerup Inlet. The name is Aboriginal Australians, Aboriginal, and has been shown on maps of the region since 1839. The meaning of the name is "place of the woman's digging or fighting stick"; the Noongar language, Noongar word for fighting stick is ''wonna'', while the suffix ''-up'' denotes ''place of''. The wonna was made from the peppermint tree, ''Agonis flexuosa'', a coastal native found only in the south-west, and was a common trade item of the Noongar people. West Busselton is a suburb of the Western Australian city of Busselton. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 8,869. Buildings from the 1850s, 1860s, and 1870s in the suburb include Broadwater Homestead, the home of Alfred Bussell, "the Gulch", a police residence, bond store and custom officer's residence, and Phoebe Abbey's House. Vasse, Western Australia
Vasse is a suburb of the city of Busselton in the South West region of Western Australia, west of Busselton and southwest of Perth. Its local government area is the City of Busselton. At the 2016 census, Vasse had a population of 2,479. The area was originally inhabited by the Wardandi people. Hurford and Penney seem to have had a bay whaling operation in Geographe Bay in 1846. The town is named after the Vasse River and Vasse Estuary, both of which in turn are named after French seaman, Thomas Vasse, who disappeared in the area in June 1801 during Nicolas Baudin's expedition. . Siesta Park is a locality of the City of Busselton in the South West region of Western Australia. Siesta Park is located on a thin strip of land between Caves Road, which forms its southern border, and Geographe Bay to the north. Geographe is a suburb of the Western Australian city of Busselton. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 3,622. ''Sandylands'', one of the first houses built in Busselton, was constructed in the area beginning in 1840 by Charles Bussell, the younger brother of John Bussell. Geographe was developed as an urban area in the mid-1990s, with the Port Geographe Marina, which was opened in 1997, being constructed as part of the development. The suburb was established in 1998, being made up of the old East Busselton locality and parts of Wonnerup.
