The City of Box Hill was a local government area about east of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The city covered an area of , and existed from 1927 until 1994. History Box Hill was originally included in the Nunawading Road District, established on 7 August 1857, which became the Shire of Nunawading on 4 May 1872. On 26 May 1925, the eastern part was severed, to create the Shire of Blackburn & Mitcham (which later became the City of Nunawading), with the remainder becoming the Borough of Box Hill on 23 December 1925. It was proclaimed a city on 28 April 1927. Accessed at State Library of Victoria, La Trobe Reading Room. On 15 December 1994, the City of Box Hill was abolished, and along with the City of Nunawading, was merged into the newly created City of Whitehorse. City Of Whitehorse
The City of Whitehorse is a local government area in Victoria, Australia in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It has an area of and in June 2018, Whitehorse had a population of 176,196. Whitehorse was formed in December 1994 by the amalgamation of the former cities of Box Hill and Nunawading. The name Whitehorse came from the White Horse Inn, a tavern originally located in the area in the late 19th century. This name was applied to the major thoroughfare, Whitehorse Road, which runs through the municipality today. In the original proposals for council amalgamations in Melbourne, Whitehorse was a suggested name for an area comprising the City of Box Hill, with the addition of residents east of Union Road (part of the old City of Camberwell). The affected residents were unhappy, believing an alignment with Box Hill would lower the value of their properties. A second proposal featured the current boundaries of Whitehorse. Koonung Creek
Koonung Creek (or Koonung Koonung Creek) is a small tributary of the Yarra River in Melbourne's east. The creek originates in Nunawading near Springvale Road, and flows to join the Yarra at the border between Ivanhoe East, Bulleen and Balwyn North. The place the two waterways meet forms the borders between these suburbs. Bushy Creek (now carried by an underground pipe) is a tributary to the creek, joining near Elgar Park in Mont Albert North. A shared use path follows the course of the creek (and therefore also the Freeway), known as the Koonung Creek Trail. Melbourne Water rates the condition of the creek as 'Very Poor'. Warrigal Road
Warrigal Road is a major inner urban road in southeastern Melbourne, Australia. On weekdays, it is heavily trafficked as it runs through many major suburbs along its route, traversing some of Melbourne's eastern and south-eastern suburbs. Box Hill City Band
Founded in 1889 Box Hill City Band, formerly the ''Box Hill Temperance Band'', ''Reporter District Brass Band'', and ''Box Hill District Band'', is one of the oldest brass bands in Victoria, Australia. History The Box Hill Temperance Band was formed in 1889 by the temperance movement in Box Hill. The first recorded performance of the band was on 24 May 1889 as part of the Queen Victoria birthday celebrations. Shortly after their beginning the band is known to have disbanded, or ceased for a short span of time around 1890 and 1893. The exact dates of the band's short disbandment then re-formation are currently unconfirmed. A photo of the band in 1890 names the band as the Box Hill United Methodists Brass Band, which suggests a change of administration took place.
