City Sprouts
City Sprouts is a community garden, urban farm, and educational resource center in the Orchard Hill neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska. Founded in 1995, City Sprouts is the oldest community garden in the city. The organization is registered as a 501(c)(3) not-for profit entity. The stated mission objectives of City Sprouts are: * To increase the availability of fresh, locally grown produce * To provide employment for at-risk youth * To educate the community about healthy lifestyle choices * To build community Through gardening with City Sprouts, students are provided the opportunity to develop employment skills. The Executive Director of City Sprouts is Roxanne Williams. A community garden is a piece of land gardened or cultivated by a group of people individually or collectively. Normally in community gardens, the land is divided into individual plots. Each individual gardener is responsible for their own plot and the yielding or the production of which belongs to the individual. In collective gardens the piece of land is not divided. A group of people cultivate it together and the harvest belongs to all participants. Orchard Hill (Omaha)
The Orchard Hill is a neighborhood in North Omaha, Nebraska. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, Orchard Hill is home to some of the city's oldest homes. The neighborhood's boundaries are Hamilton Street on the south, Blondo Street on the north, 36th Street on the east and the Omaha Belt Line on the west. The John A. Creighton Boulevard runs through the eastern part of the neighborhood. Permaculture
Permaculture is an approach to land management and settlement design that adopts arrangements observed in flourishing natural ecosystems. It includes a set of design principles derived using whole-systems thinking. Lauritzen Gardens
Lauritzen Gardens are a botanical gardens and arboretum located at 100 Bancroft Street in the South Omaha neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska. The gardens are open daily during business hours; an admission fee is charged. History The gardens began in 1982, following two years of preliminary planning. Construction started in 1995 on the rose garden. Other early gardens included a shade hosta garden, herb garden, children's garden, and spring flowering walk.
