City Of Asylum Pittsburgh
City of Asylum (more formally City of Asylum/Pittsburgh) is a nonprofit organization based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that houses writers exiled from their countries for their controversial writing. It provides them with free housing, health care and access to social services and resettlement in the United States. Their expanded mission involves the Alphabet City venue, ''Sampsonia Way'' magazine, and organizing Jazz Poetry Month in Pittsburgh. Henry Reese and Diane Samuels founded Pittsburgh's City of Asylum in 2004. The organization has a community-based model, with the hopes of integrating the exiled writers into the United States. Exiled writers accepted to the program are granted up to four years of housing. It also gives financial and medical support for their families for two years, giving them ample time and means to adjust to life in the United States. Oliver Lake
Oliver Lake (born September 14, 1942) is an American jazz saxophonist, flutist, composer, poet, and visual artist. He is known mainly for alto saxophone, but he also performs on soprano and flute. During the 1960s, Lake worked with the Black Artists Group in St. Louis. In 1977, he founded the World Saxophone Quartet with David Murray, Julius Hemphill, and Hamiet Bluiett. He worked in the group Trio 3 with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille. He has appeared on more than 80 albums as a bandleader, co-leader, and side musician. He is the father of drummer Gene Lake. Thaddeus G. Mosley (born 1926) is a United States sculptor who works mostly in wood and is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Biography A native of New Castle, Pennsylvania, Mosley enlisted in the U.S. Navy, then graduated in 1950 from the University of Pittsburgh, where he majored in English and journalism, then settled in Pittsburgh and took a job with the U.S. Postal Service. Some freelance journalism in the 1950s for the Pittsburgh Courier and various national magazines sparked his interest in carving and sculpture. Jorge Olivera Castillo (b. Havana, Cuba, 1961) is a Cuban poet and dissident. He worked as a journalist for the Cuban state-run television station ICRT for 10 years. He was briefly detained in 1992 for trying to leave the country on a raft; in 1993, he left his position at ICRT and began writing reports for Radio Martí, a U.S.-funded, Miami-based station critical of the Cuban government. With two other journalists, he founded an independent news agency, Havana Press, in 1995, and later became the director. Olivera Castillo was arrested in 2003 as part of the Black Spring crackdown and sentenced to eighteen years in prison for writing articles "against national independence and Cuba's economy". Bewketu Seyoum ( Ge'ez: በዕውቀቱ ስዩም) is an Ethiopian writer and poet from Debre Markos of Ethiopia. He studied psychology at Addis Ababa University and published his first collection of poems, ''Nwari Alba Gojowoch'' (Unmanned Cottage) in 2000, a year after graduating. Osama Alomar (Arabic: اسامة الحويج العمر) born Damascus, Syria, 1968, is a Syrian short story writer poet and essayist. He is especially recognized for his work in the "very short story" medium. Tuhin Das is a Bengali activist and writer living in exile. Das is best known for his Bengali poetry and political essays. His first English book Exile Poems focuses on his life as an exiled writer. After extremist threats, Tuhin Das fled to America for political asylum in 2016. He became a writer-in-residence at City of Asylum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which offers sanctuary for persecuted writers. In 2021, his house became a public art installation called ''Comma House'' featuring his Bengali poems. About Tuhin Das was born in Barisal. He lived there with his family.
