City Newspaper
''City Newspaper'' is the alternative weekly newspaper of Rochester, New York. It was first published October 5, 1971 and is free in over 600 locations across Rochester and the Finger Lakes region. Owned by founders Mary Anna and Bill Towler from 1971 until 2019, the paper was sold to the WXXI Public Broadcasting Council in May 2019 when the founders decided to go into retirement. CITY Newspaper is part of WXXI's for-profit arm. WXXI Public Broadcasting Council
The WXXI Public Broadcasting Council is a community non-profit organization of some 36,000 subscribing members in the Rochester, New York metropolitan area, and owns that city's major public television and Community radio stations, a newspaper, and other broadcasting services. The Public Broadcasting Council also partners with the City of Rochester to operate and program named City12, a Government-access television (GATV) cable channel which airs Public-access television programming and live City Council meetings on a 15-hour daily schedule. The Association of Alternative Newsmedia (AAN) is a trade association of alternative weekly newspapers in North America. It provides services to many generally liberal or progressive weekly newspapers across the United States and in Canada. AAN also operates AltWeeklies.com — a web portal that highlights the best news stories, features, arts criticism, and political commentary from its member newspapers. History The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies was founded in 1978 in Seattle, Washington, with 30 newspapers from America's largest cities. In July 2011, the organization's name was changed to the Association of Alternative Newsmedia by a vote of members attending the group's annual meeting.
