Citizen Ashe
''Citizen Ashe'' is an 2021 American-British documentary film directed by Rex Miller and Sam Pollard revolving around the life and career of Arthur Ashe. Alex Gibney and John Legend were the executive producers. It had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 3, 2021. It began a limited release by Magnolia Pictures on December 3, 2021. Synopsis ''Citizen Ashe'' tells the story of tennis champion and civil rights activist, Arthur Ashe, as he rises to prominence after becoming the first African American to win the US Open in 1968. Sam Pollard (filmmaker)
Samuel D. Pollard is an American film director, editor, producer, and screenwriter. His films have garnered numerous awards such as Peabodys, Emmys, and an Academy Award nomination. In 2020, the International Documentary Association gave him a career achievement award. Spike Lee, whose films Pollard has edited and produced, described him as being "a master filmmaker." Henry Louis Gates Jr. characterizes his work in this way: "When I think about his documentaries, they add up to a corpus — a way of telling African-American history in its various dimensions." Harry Edwards (born November 22, 1942) is an American sociologist and civil rights activist. He completed his Ph.D. at Cornell University and is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. Lenny Simpson
Lendward Simpson (September 23, 1948 – February 9, 2024) was an American professional tennis player and founder of One Love Tennis, a tennis and academic enrichment program for at-risk kids. Early career Simpson was introduced to tennis in 1953 at age 5 at the nearby tennis court of physician, tennis champion and civil rights activist Hubert A. Eaton by Althea Gibson who lived with the Eatons and was practicing there. Althea Gibson was the first African-American athlete to cross the color line in international tennis and would go on to become a barrier breaking tennis champion and winner of Wimbledon, US Open and French Open.
