Circaetinae
Circaetinae is a bird of prey subfamily which consists of a group of medium to large broad-winged species. These are mainly birds which specialise in feeding on snakes and other reptiles, which is the reason most are referred to as "snake-eagles" or "serpent-eagles". The exceptions are the bateleur, a more generalised hunter, and the Philippine eagle, which preys on mammals and birds. All but one of the subfamily are restricted to warmer parts of the Old World: ''Spilornis'' and ''Pithecophaga'' in south Asia, the others in Africa. The short-toed eagle ''Circaetus gallicus'' migrates between temperate Eurasia and Africa, as well as being resident in India. They have hooked beaks for tearing flesh from their prey, strong legs and powerful Talon (anatomy), talons. They also have extremely keen eyesight to enable them to spot potential prey from a distance. Bateleur
The bateleur (; ''Terathopius ecaudatus'') is a medium-sized eagle in the family Accipitridae. The brown snake eagle (''Circaetus cinereus'') is a fairly large species of bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. It is found in West, East and southern Africa. This species is an almost obligate predator of a variety of snakes. A very solitary bird, the brown snake eagle has a prolonged breeding cycle and raises a single eaglet. Andaman Serpent Eagle
The Andaman Serpent Eagle (''Spilornis elgini''), also known as the Andaman dark-serpent eagle or the dark serpent eagle, is a medium-sized bird in the family Accipitridae, the raptor family, that is only found in India on the Andaman Islands. It is currently classified as vulnerable and is experiencing population declines. This species, unlike Spilornis cheela, is incredibly understudied and so many things about its behaviour and ecology are still widely unknown. Short-toed Snake Eagle
The short-toed snake eagle (''Circaetus gallicus''), also known as the short-toed eagle, is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as kites, buzzards and harriers. The genus name ''Circaetus'' is from the Ancient Greek ''kirkos'', a type of hawk, and ''aetos'', "eagle". The specific ''gallicus'' means "of Gallia". Taxonomy The short-toed snake eagle was formally described in 1788 by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in his revised and expanded edition of Carl Linnaeus's ''Systema Naturae''. Congo Serpent Eagle
The Congo serpent eagle (''Dryotriorchis spectabilis'') is a species of bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. It is the only member of the monotypic genus ''Dryotriorchis'', although it was formerly placed in ''Circaetus''. This species is distributed across the African tropical rainforest, including upper and lower Guinean forests. This serpent eagle specializes in hunting in these forests’ dark understories. It has two subspecies, the nominate subspecies ''Dryotriorchis spectabilis spectabilis'' and ''Dryotriorchis spectabilis batesi''. Mountain Serpent Eagle
The mountain serpent eagle (''Spilornis kinabaluensis''), also known as the Kinabalu serpent eagle, is a bird of prey that is found in northern Borneo. It is found at altitudes of in forest, especially where it becomes stunted. Where their range overlaps, the crested serpent eagle generally occurs at lower altitudes. The mountain serpent eagle is darker than the Bornean subspecies of the crested serpent eagle. The mountain serpent eagle is threatened by habitat loss. However, they occur within the Kinabalu National Park and the Gunung Mulu National Park.
