Cindy Ngamba
Cindy Winner Djankeu Ngamba (born 7 September 1998) is a Cameroonian boxer who competed for the EOC Refugee Team at the 2023 European Games. She is the first-ever medalist for the Refugee Olympic Team at the Olympics, having won bronze in women's 75 kg boxing at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Personal life Ngamba was born in Cameroon. At the age of 11, Ngamba moved to the United Kingdom. Her uncle lost Ngamba's immigration paperwork when he moved back to Cameroon. Ngamba has since gained a BA (Hons) degree in Crime and Criminal Justice at the University of Bolton. In 2019, Ngamba and her brother were detained whilst attending an immigration office in Bolton, and sent to a detention centre in London. They were released the following day. Aged 18, Ngamba came out as lesbian; as such, she does not want to return to Cameroon, where homosexuality is illegal. Refugee Olympic Team
The Refugee Olympic Team is a group made up of independent Olympic participants who are refugees. In March 2016, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach announced the creation of the Refugee Olympic Athletes Team, as a symbol of hope for all refugees in the world in order to raise global awareness of the scale of the migrant crisis in Europe. In September 2017, the IOC established the Olympic Refugee Foundation to continue supporting refugees in the long term. The Olympic flag and the Olympic Hymn are used as team symbols. As the participating athletes marched through the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics, the team entered the stadium as the penultimate delegation, just before the host country. Tammara Thibeault (born December 27, 1996) is a Canadian boxer competing in the Middleweight category. Thibeault won the 2022 World Championship in Istanbul after earlier winning the middleweight bronze in 2019. She is the reigning Commonwealth Games champion when she won gold in Birmingham in 2022, improving on her bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Thibeault is also the current Pan American Games champion when she won gold at the 2023 Pan Am Games, again improving on her bronze from the 2019 Pan American Games. Career At her first Senior event, Thibeault won the gold medal at the 2017 Pan American Championships which were held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The 2022 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships (the 12th edition of the championships) was held in Istanbul, Turkey from 8 to 20 May 2022. Yahya Al Ghotany (; born 2004) is a Syrian taekwondo practitioner. A refugee in Jordan, he was selected to compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics and was named the flag bearer for the Refugee Olympic Team. Biography Al Ghotany was born in Syria as the first of seven children. The Syrian civil war started when he was age seven, and his family fled the country for the Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. In 2016, at age 12, he learned of taekwondo "by chance": a friend informed him of courses taught nearby by the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF), at the Azraq Academy.
