Château-Gontier
Château-Gontier () is a former commune in the Mayenne department in north-western France. On 1 January 2019, it was merged into the new commune Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne. Geography It is about south of Laval, the préfecture of the department of Mayenne. Château-Gontier is home to the Refuge de l'Arche, also known as the Ark Refug a refuge for abandoned or mistreated animals. History There are chalybeate springs close to the town. Château-Gontier owes its origin and its name to a castle erected in the first half of the 11th century by Gunther, the steward of Fulk Nerra of Anjou, on the site of a farm belonging to the monks of St Aubin d’Angers. On the extinction of the family, the lordship was assigned by Louis XI of France to Philippe de Comines. The town suffered severely during the wars of the League. Mayenne () is a landlocked department in northwest France named after the river Mayenne. Mayenne is part of the administrative region of Pays de la Loire and is surrounded by the departments of Manche, Orne, Sarthe, Maine-et-Loire, and Ille-et-Vilaine. Mayenne is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March 1790. The northern two thirds correspond to the western part of the former province of Maine. Louis-François Allard
Louis-François Allard ( - ) was a French physician and politician. First years His father, René Allard, was a merchant and a public figure in Craon, Mayenne, Craon: he was convened in 1770 by the Présidial Councillor, as well as master Jacques-René Chassebœuf (father of Constantin François de Chassebœuf, comte de Volney, Volney), lawyer at Craon and former administrator of the hospital, to deliberate on the reforms to the mismanagement of the Hôtel-Dieu de Craon. René Allard married Marthe-Marie Gousset on 10 May 1734 and she gave him a son who received the names of Louis François. He became medical doctor in the University of Angers on 19 November 1754. Claude Jacqueline Pompidou (née Cahour; 13 November 1912 – 3 July 2007) was the wife of President of France Georges Pompidou. She was a philanthropist and a patron of modern art, especially through the Centre Georges Pompidou. Alexis Roger
Alexis-André Roger (11 June 1814 – 1846) was a French composer. Born in Château-Gontier, in 1828 Roger was admitted to study at the Conservatoire de Paris. He studied harmony with Victor Dourlen, counterpoint with Anton Reicha, piano with Pierre-Joseph-Guillaume Zimmermann, Pierre Zimmermann and Organ (music), organ with François Benoist. His composition teachers were Jean-François Lesueur and Ferdinando Paër. After a commendatory mention in 1838, he won the Premier Grand Prix in 1842 with the cantata ''La Reine flore'' in the competition for the Prix de Rome. At the beginning of 1843 he began his two-year stay at the Villa Medici in Rome, which was associated with the prize. This was followed by a trip to Vienna and to Germany, where he died in 1846 at the age of thirty-two. Ernest Charles Guy de Girard, count then marquis de Charnacé (3 May 1825 – 3 March 1909) was a French writer, journalist, agronomist and musicologist.
