San MartÃn de Tours is a rural Roman Catholic parish church in the parish of San MartÃn, near Sotrondio, in the territory of the municipality of San MartÃn del Rey Aurelio in Asturias, Spain. The exterior of the building is white, except the doors and other openings which are masonry. At the top is a belfry. History The municipality hosted a royal residence in medieval times and is named after King Aurelius of Asturias. The first church at the site was likely erected in the 9th century in a pre-Romanesque style. The present church was built over the centuries: since its original building it has undergone several reforms. The church was rebuilt after being subject to arson during the Spanish Civil War. Martin of Tours ( la, Sanctus Martinus Turonensis; 316/336 – 8 November 397), also known as Martin the Merciful, was the third bishop of Tours. He has become one of the most familiar and recognizable Christian saints in France, heralded as the patron saint of the Third Republic, and is patron saint of many communities and organizations across Europe. A native of Pannonia (in central Europe), he converted to Christianity at a young age. He served in the Roman cavalry in Gaul, but left military service at some point prior to 361, when he became a disciple of Hilary of Poitiers, establishing the monastery at Ligugé. He was consecrated as Bishop of Caesarodunum (Tours) in 371. As bishop, he was active in the suppression of the remnants of Gallo-Roman religion, but he opposed the violent persecution of the Priscillianist sect of ascetics. San MartÃn del Rey Aurelio ( Asturian: SamartÃn del Rei Aurelio) is a municipality of the Autonomous Community of the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain. There are three main towns in the municipality: Sotrondio, El Entrego, and Blimea, and many villages, such as Santa Bárbara and La Hueria. It is situated in the central part of Asturias, just below the Sierra de San Mamés, part of the Cantabrian Mountains. The Nalón River, the longest river in Asturias, crosses the municipality. The Redes Natural Park is located nearby. Historically a mining location, nowadays it is in a re-industrial process with the emigration of many young people (about 30% of under 30). New computer based factories are attempting to establish themselves. Aurelius Of Asturias
Aurelius ( es, Aurelio) (c. 740 – 774) was the King of Asturias from 768 to his death. Born in León, he was the son of Fruela of Cantabria (son of Peter of Cantabria); nephew of Alfonso I of Asturias; and a cousin of his predecessor, Fruela the Cruel. His brother, Bermudo I, later reigned as king 789 – 791. Aurelius was chosen as king by the Asturian nobility after Fruela assassinated his brother and was in turn assassinated. He is believed to have been crowned in Sama. His seems to have been a relatively quiet and peaceful reign, attested by the near-absence of mention of his reign in the medieval chronicles. The only event of his reign narrated in the chronicles was a rebellion of serfs, which Aurelius put down. The location of the uprising is unknown, but it is the first recorded instance of anti- seignorial revolt in the history of the Iberian Peninsula.
