Church Of Santa Catalina (El Bonillo)
The Church of Santa Catalina ( Spanish: ''Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Catalina'') is a church located in El Bonillo, Spain. It was declared '' Bien de Interés Cultural'' in 1992. The church was erected on an earlier structure, with the present edifice begun in 1699. The main retablo was begun in 1733. The present organ, now repaired, dates from the late 18th century. The parish museum has a ''Christ hugging the Cross'' by El Greco; a ''Christ of the Miracles'' by Vicente López Portaña, and a ''St Peter'' and ''St Vincent Ferrer'' attributed to Giuseppe Ribera Jusepe de Ribera (1591 – 1652) was a painter and printmaker, who along with Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and the singular Diego Velázquez, are regarded as the major artists of Spanish Baroque painting. A retablo is a devotional painting, especially a small popular or folk art one using iconography derived from traditional Catholic church art. More generally ''retablo'' is also the Spanish term for a retable or reredos above an altar, whether a large altarpiece painting or an elaborate wooden structure with sculptures. Typically this includes painting, sculpture or a combination of the two, and an elaborate framework enclosing it. The Latin etymology of the Spanish word means "board behind". Aside from being found behind the altar, "similar ornamental structures are built and carved over facades and doorways", called overdoors. Vicente López Portaña
Vicente López Portaña, OIC (; September 19, 1772July 22, 1850) was a Spanish painter, considered one of the best portrait painters of his time. Early life Vicente López Portaña was born in Valencia on September 19, 1772. His parents were Cristóbal López Sanchordi and Manuela Portaña Meer. Vicente López began formally studying painting in Valencia at the age of thirteen, he was a disciple of father Antonio de Villanueva, a Franciscan friar, and he studied at the Academy of San Carlos in his native city. He was seventeen when he won first prize in drawing and coloring receiving a scholarship to study in the prestigious Academia Real de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. For the following three years in Madrid, he apprenticed with the Valencian painter, Mariano Salvador Maella.
