Church Road Railway Station
Church Road railway station was a railway station in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, on the Midland Railway's Birmingham West Suburban Railway. History The station, which was located in a cutting at the mouth of a short tunnel, operated between 1876 and 1925, before closing due to lack of patronage. Although the line remains open, almost no trace now remains of the station. On 7 July 1906 a passenger, Charles White, and his stepfather arrived at the station and purchased tickets for Birmingham New Street. As there was some time to wait for the train, they left the station and went into Carpenter Road. They were later observed on the southbound platform, and the elder man was struggling with Charles White, as if to restrain him from crossing the line. White broke free and jumped down into the adjacent tunnel. The station master, Mr Wilton heard the commotion and arrived on the platform, but unfortunately fell onto the track. Initially a small and insignificant halt (though the suffix 'halt' did not begin appearing until the 1900s), Church Road grew in importance and a telephone kiosk was installed in 1891, together with the larger waiting room. For many years, the station's flowerbeds had its name spelt out in bedding plants. The station's patronage slumped in the post-war years. Harrington (Church Road Halt) Railway Station
Harrington railway station, or Church Road halt, was a railway station in Harrington, Cumbria, England. It was opened by the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway (C&WJR) on the company's Harrington Branch which connected with the Lowca Light Railway at Rosehill to provide a through route from to and beyond. Official, authoritative and regional sources variously refer to the halt as Harrington (Church Road Halt), Harrington Church Road, Church Road Halt and simply Church Road. Sources agree when the halt closed, but differ on when it opened. One authoritative source gives the opening as November 1913, whilst a key source with local knowledge gives both 1918 and November 1913 as the date the halt first appeared on the timetable. A later writer says the halt was in use by September 1913. Gradients The route, and especially the Lowca Light Railway, was very steeply graded. St Mary Church Road Railway Station
St Mary Church Road railway station was a railway station in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. Description The station was one of the three original stations opened on the Cowbridge and Aberthaw Railway. It served the village of St Mary Church, which was about a mile to the west, and also served a number of other smaller settlements, none of which were particularly close to the railway. The station consisted of a single platform with a building of red and yellow bricks. It was of a similar design to the one at Cowbridge, but smaller. It had a goods-loop opposite the platform. The station was fully signalled and the signal box was located on the platform beside the passenger building. St Mary Church Road was the only station on the Cowbridge-Aberthaw line to be signaled. The remainder of the line was worked on the 'one engine in steam' principle.
