The Church of the Incarnation is an American Roman Catholic parish church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, located at 1290 St. Nicholas Avenue (Juan Pablo Duarte Boulevard) at the corner of 175th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York City, New York. The church is known as "the St. Patrick's Cathedral of Washington Heights". History The parish "was founded in 1908 by the Rev. P. J. Church Of The Incarnation, Episcopal (Manhattan)
The Church of the Incarnation is a historic Episcopal church at 205–209 Madison Avenue at the northeast corner of 35th Street in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The church was founded in 1850, p. 111 as a chapel of Grace Church located at 28th Street and Madison. In 1852, it became an independent parish, and in 1864–1865 the parish built its own sanctuary at its current location. In 2020, it reported 505 members, average attendance of 109, and $241,642 in plate and pledge income. Notable parishioners Notable among the parishioners of the church were Admiral David Farragut and Eleanor Roosevelt, who was confirmed in the church. Theodore McCarrick
Theodore Edgar McCarrick (born July 7, 1930) is a laicized American bishop and former cardinal of the Catholic Church. Ordained a priest in 1958, he became an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York in 1977, then became Bishop of Metuchen, New Jersey, in 1981. From 1986 to 2000, he was Archbishop of Newark. He was created a cardinal in February 2001 and served as Archbishop of Washington from 2001 to 2006. Following credible allegations of repeated sexual misconduct towards boys and seminarians, he was removed from public ministry in June 2018, became the first cardinal to resign from the College of Cardinals because of claims of sexual abuse in July 2018, and was laicized in February 2019. The Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of New York, most often known as the Sisters of Charity of New York, is a religious congregation of sisters in the Catholic Church whose primary missions are education and nursing and who are dedicated in particular to the service of the poor. Incarnation School is a private Catholic elementary school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S. It was founded in 1910. History In 1908, the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney was assigned to establish a parish in Washington Heights to relieve overcrowding at St. Elizabeth's and St. Rose of Lima Parishes. The new parish was christened Incarnation. To meet the new challenge, Father Mahoney rented a store at 1253 St. Nicholas Avenue between 172nd and 173rd Street and used it as a temporary chapel with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass being offered there for the first time on Sunday, September 6, 1908. On November 1, 1908, he relocated his temporary chapel to the corner of St. Nicholas Avenue and 171st Street.
